Hiya!

Have just found the site and it is wonderful to have somewhere to be in contact with others in the same boat and read the threads.

i was just wondering how many people had tried going to find the sun for a week as a way of geting throught the winter and what the results were?

I suffer really badly and went to Tunisia for a week in jan as an experiment. I was absolutely amazed at the effect it had and how it lasted. it took about 3 days and then i woke up and the first thought running through my head was 'i feel normal?!!' also because the change was in such a short space rather than the usual gradual slide it really accentuated the difference. the change lasted for weeks after i got back and because we had such a lovely spring i was pretty much ok from then on.

I am going to try going at the end of nov to see if that gets me through dec and wondered if anyone had any similar experiences?

i know it's not a cheap solution but i'd pay anything not to feel as usually i do nov-feb!!

take Care

The problem with going away somewhere nice in winter is the horrifying experience of coming back to the UK! It makes me realise just how DARK this country is in winter.

I go away usually Oct half term week so I have something to look forward to and lessen the sadness of summer disappearing. The shock of coming back is not good though, it was much worse in January though as I came back to freezing fog and I couldn't get warm for days.

out of the last three winters I have had extended period off work during 2. THe remaining one I spent Christmas in the Caribbean visiting my sis. Last year after a long time off work, I went back after a trip to Nice. It left me feeling well enough to do that. I felt better almost as soon as I got to Nice, It wasn't tropical, but it was warm enough to spend plenty of time walking around outside and some days OK to sit outside for coffee or lunch. SLightly longer daylight than here at the time (January) and better quality light as well. I would definitely do it again given the chance.

I have been to the Canary Islands twice in the last three winters, during January. The temperature was a nice comfortable 20C, but the weather was a mixed bag both times, about 50% sunny days.

It does help me through my worst period (January and February), but as said earlier, the arrival home afterwards is a bit of a shocker!

Hello,
I'm new to this site, and it is good to read postings on exactly how I feel. I have not been diagnosed with SAD, but I have all the symptoms i.e hibernation tendancies, not wanting social contact, finding getting up and going to work a struggle and daily normal tasks at home. I keep getting tearful and morose and thinking back several years it is always the same months. This year is particularly bad, and I wondered if it was because I went to Malta for 1 week, where I was fine, returned to UK for about 10 days, felt awful again, then went to Lanzarote for a week and now I have returned I feel worse than ever. Can going away too much make you feel worse? I am considering another week away, but don't know if it is a good idea and also my colleagues might start bitching about me taking three holidays within 2 months!

HI carrie and welcome.I went on holiday to Greece during our so called Summer, the weather on holiday was brilliant, but within days of returning home I felt terrible and had to start using my lightbox straight away. Not sure about a Winter holiday, its great while you are away but then you have to come back to dark gloomy weather.

hi, i have spent the past week in Cornwall with hubby and son during half term. I felt much better whilst away not just in terms of weather (although it was sunny every day) but I had none of the usual day to day pressures. We just had a wonderful relaxing time. Then I woke up this morning......feeling panicky, tearful and just down. I have to go back to work and all the usual stuff is all falling back into place and the weather is just dire, It's so dark today.Sorry to sound so negative that's just how it is for me right now.

hi paulst, I have just bought a dawn simulator to help me with getting up and am looking at getting a lightbox.I had a chat with a friend of a friend today who very kindly came over to demonstrate his light box for me and I'm pretty sure that it will do me the world of good and thats after only trying it for 15 minutes. I just loved the brightness of it.

Hi

I always try to go away somewhere sunny in late January (my worst month by a mile). That way I have something to look forward to throughout the winter, and by the time I get back, there's only a few weeks till spring starts to kick in.

I would highly recommend it, it works for me! This year I am going to Cuba....can't wait! I am always broke with old scabby clothes and holes in my shoes because I spend all my money on holidays, but it's worth it!!

I went three years ago and loved it, so going back, although to a different area. Temperature is about 25-27 degrees in January and it is their dry season.

Went to Havana last time, that is one strange place! Everything is falling down and crumbling, but it is still beautiful in its own way. And the mojitos (rum cocktails) are fantastic!

Sounds nice, I read that the crime rate is very low. We have been toying with the idea of going to Mexico or Cuba, there doesnt seem to be much difference in price, but Cuba seems to be the friendlier of the two.

Well, it isn't going to happen again yet as far as I know! ALthough we are having underfloor heating in the new kitchen/dining/sitting room! It also has huge windows.... panels with doors in measure 4m by 2m, then there's a triangle above it and 2 rooflights as well!
