Well i can feel it starting again! Grumpy, sleeping loads during day, unmotivated, avoiding people, missing work, fuzzy head, tearful...thought SAD might give me a break this year! Unsure whether to go to GP for my usual meds prescription or try to fight it alone this year with natural help and light box? Every year i have tried without meds and always failed.

That's how I was getting KT. My GP suggested that this year I start the meds before the problems started, in the hope that I might keep them at bay. Had a few wobbly moments, but so far so good, am feeling much better than I did at this time last year. WIll just have to see how it goes. I'm still feeling a bit anti social, but I figure just take it as it comes and see how I get on. I hope that it prevents a full onslaught of the condition. Just wanna keep my head above water.

HI, ive done the same this year, started medication a few weeks early and have avoided the sudden slump, when everything seems so grey. so far so good.

I knew that I needed to be on top of things. When the doc suggested it last year, I thought it was a bit daft, but on reflection I do see the sense in it.

First of all, getting acclimatised to med when you're feeling relatively well is so much easier than when you're feeling s***e!

Second, if I don't go down as far, it won't be as far up again. I may not get that slump at all I suppose, but can't imagine that the med is THAT good! You never know!

Hi kt,

I started my exercise regime at the start of September and so far so good. Last year was the first time I tried this (running three times a week), I can't emphasise strongly enough how much better I felt last year than I ever have in the 10 years I have had SAD. I was still absolutely knackered all the time, but I had no severe bouts of depression at all.

I think the trick is to start with the exercise before your SAD really kicks in, otherwise it is just too hard to force yourself to do it. Honestly though, if someone had suggested exercise to me in the middle of winter 2 or 3 years ago, I would have felt like punching them.....but it helps. Well, it helps me anyway - everyone is different!

Now I've just remembered what the third thing is.... I knew I would be having a stressful (or at least relatively stressful) half term next week. Based on how I was at this time last year, I wanted to maximise my chances of feeling OK. I'm taking the Youth Orchestra on a twin town visit.

Im awful at exercise - i know i should do some but i just cant haul myself out of bed to face it. I have thought about going running before work (afterwards im so tired) but i dont know if i could get up an hour or so earlier than what i already do. And right now i have trouble even motivating myself to put the kettle on. I have had sad for 10 years now and it still shocks me each year at how unprepared i am for it.

I have been suffering for years and would finally like to try a lamp. There do not appear to be any reviews. Any recomendations would be good. A dawn lamp also appeals. Any info would be great. Thanks Rich

I have suffered with SAD for about 12 years. I have done the PROZAC thing waiting until I was really low, starting before onset etc. Last September I bought an Inspiration 3 in 1 light box - I have had a Golite before that. The 3 in 1 helped me get through last winter with no meds. It wakes me up in the morning then I turn it onto my eyes and my long suffering hubby brings me my breakfast to eat whilst I get an extra 15 mins. I have kept the dawn simulator going all summer and bought another light for my desk at work. Only had one wobble so far this year which is very good going for me! Anyone used an ioniser I am thinking about getting one after reading recent research.

The lamp I use is a Pharos by outsidein/lumie.Bought it in October last year when I was really suffering,noticed a difference after only a couple of days.I would strongly recommend it.

I wrote a reply at lunchtime but it got lost somewhere.

I have a golite now and really like it, it is compact and comes with travel adaptor, It has a shorter treatment time than the Lumie Brightspark that I used to use, It is a lot less cumbersome as well,

I have a sunrise unit that I plug my bedside lamp into. It's very flexible in time you can set it for etc, I like it very much.

What sunrise unit do you have? There does not seem to be much difference between the new and old Golite except for the rechargable battery. Both quite expensive though. Is there a good combination dawm sim and light box? Thanks again....Rich

I have the mains golite, didn't want the hassle of the rechargeable.

Thanks. I cannot decide what to buy. I think I will start on a Dawn Replicator. The Inspiration 3 in 1 light box sounds good but the user reviews are very mixed. there is also the question of blue light and AMD. Nothing is simple. Thanks again.

i'm having the same dilema, Richard. I think i want to get a body clock and also a light treatment box of some kind but really not sure which way to go. At the moment I'm quite sold on the lumie sunray body clock £60 which is reasonable. I'm finding it difficult to decide on a light box though.I only started looking into this yesterday so it's early days.

I have the 3 in 1 inspiration. In fact I have 2! I have one at home and one at work - it makes a great not too obvious SAD desk light and you can alter the brightness when you have had enough! They have just brought a new version out I think, which has even better dawn simulation.

Is it usual to want to disappear for 3 or 4 days without returning phone calls from friends and family? My family was really worried this last time... thinking I'd done myself in, but I just couldn't get out of bed. How do I explain myself to them and is there some way I can let them know when it's starting, so they don't worry so much? Thanks, LN

Hi LN, Yes, I think that's a pretty common feeling for people. I sent my family into a spin last year, when I went to work, decided it was a non starter, switched my moby off and went to the coast instead. I was only awol for a day & it never occurred that people would think I'd topped myself but apparently there was a frantic round of "where is she?" calls. Oops.
How do you explain yourself? Do they know about SAD? Once people start to understand it helps - I find "sorry, I'm hibernating" useful. Sometimes though you might feel a bit better if you answer the phone, just once or twice - having a laugh with friends is a perk-up.
Finally 3.31am? - you're either outside the UK or you're sleeping isn't what it should be. Take care of yourself.

Doing the hiding thing myself at the moment. Haven't been to work since last Tuesday. now sat here trying to build the courage to phone the boss.

Been on fluoxetine for last 6 weeks and started the lamp at about the same time, to try and prevent the fall this year.
But seems it crept up on me again.
