Hi everyone

Was just wondering if everyone has a hobby or something to keep their minds off of the increasingly shorter days? I try and do my drawing and painting, i also make cards and ive just signed up for a floristry course on saturday mornings at my local college. I like things where i can use bright colours and express myself, i find the brighter the colours the happier i feel!

I also read in the evenings and can quite easily read a book in 2 days.

:-)

HI kirsty, have you ever tried photography, its a hobby I used to enjoy and have recently returned to. Several times ive tried drawing, but have come to the conclusion that I am hopeless, I think I will stick to using a camera. You are right about colours, I always find sunny colours like yellow and orange cheer me up

I don't really have any hobbies that I do over the winter, I find getting through the days takes all of the energy that I have and I don't feel the need for anything else.

I have a very time consuming hobby that is only spring, summer and autumn (last weekend this weekend) and that works really well for me. I spend the rest of the winter at work or on the sofa!

Hi Kirsty

I too make cards. It's great at the moment because you can really lose yourself in it making all the Christmas cards!

I find it really theraputic and have got most of my family in to it too.

Mountainbiking and hillwalking at the weekend.
Swimming (lessons) and squash in the week. I want to go to Tai chi, get back to running and learn to snowboard (manchesters just an indoor ski slope). The wintersun holidays will be mainly surfing in the canaries.
Having said that I'm now dinking cider and about to start playing computer games - call of duty.

From one paul to another welcome,my goodness, you have a busy life, I think im quite lazy compared to you, just walking and photography. How do you manage to do so much, I find im really disorganised at this time of the year.

I had to look twice there Paulst. I thought you had taken on a new lease of life.....lol

I admire that you have the motivation to go walking and do your photography.

I find it crucial to avoid introspection. An empty mind is the devils playground. In doing any task I have a radio on in the background. Talk is most effective, so however much it ages me I confess to Radio 2, 4, World service and in desperation, BBC local radio. Tai chi is excellent, for if you are doing it properly, your mind simply cannot be elsewhere.

Ahem.... I listen to Radio 4 sometimes, when in the car to and from school etc I listen to podcasts, I prefer speech to music. World service if it's the middle of the night.

I have a dab radio and find listening to classical music quite soothing, sometimes if I want some music to wake me up (very often), I tune in to Planet rock and feel a lot better. Most people find it quite boring, but I have to admit to enjoying news programs, the World service is a good example, you can get it 24 hours a day on dab.

i do yoga and meditation, it really helps to focus.
graphic design photograpy making art
actually those last few things are not a hobby it's my work ;-)))
only not doing too much of that lately, distracted by motherhood and coping with my life,
this time of year 11 years ago i lost my boyfriend in a climbing accident in scotland, so darker days are even darker for me since then.

I've got back into reading again. I'd devour books as a child but I read much much less now. But for me it's a nice, comforting thing to curl up in a duvet and warm clothes with a cup of tea and read a good book.

I am walking my dogs a lot more too, to actually get out during the daylight and get some exercise and it seems to be good. Kirsty, your dog in your avatar is so cute! What an expression! ^_^

I want to get back into crafty stuff, but my house is in chaos - total replastering and redecorating, it's driving me mad! Something to pick up in a few months I think.

Yoga is great, though I don't do it much. When I do, it makes me feel really good.

Trick is to keep busy. I've learned that if I stop and start thinking/ brooding, I have to force myself to get up and do something, because I know it will only make me feel worse otherwise.

I love my crafts too Purple Ivy. I love to cook and do anything that involves creating. I think it's a way I can express myself without talking to anyone.

I agree with you Faerie, if you don't make an effort to do something, you just lay there thinking about how bad you feel. It is hard, but once you've done it you should be proud of yourself.

I find cooking hard work in the winter, it's a lack of concentration thing I think. We're just having a new kitchen fitted, it's the end of a big renovation/extension project. I haven't had a proper kitchen since the beginning of May!
