Does anyone have any good tips to help to get a good nights sleep, apart from being hit on the head with a frying pan.

LOL! try googling 'sleep hygiene'. I was reading yesterday that this is outmoded, but you need to check the list of stuff and think about what applies to you. e.g, if you have had coffee every night for the last 20 years, there's no use cutting it out, as it isn't a problem.

I use my sunset thing on my dawn simulator, I find it calming.

I find reading non-fiction quite restful, something undemanding,

I find that being the right temperature in bed is important to how well I settle, whether I wake up or not and also how soon I settle again.

Yoga helps me. Some gentle stretching.

Decaf tea to soothe me. I try to decrease my activity level (a.k.a. no aerobic exercise or heavy housework) at least an hour before bed.

I make lists of things I'm worried I'll forget. Of course, then you lie down and you think of something else for the list...

I ought to turn the TV off before bed. I have it on a sleep timer, and I know I don't sleep as well when I have noise as I'm falling asleep. It'd be better if I read!

I'll take benedryl for allergies in the summertime, but I'm too afraid to take it in the wintertime, as I think I'll wake up drowsy.

If I have a bit of insomnia, I try to lay still and breath slowly, as if I were falling asleep.

I hope this is helpful. These things help me, but I still often feel tired because I don't always take my own advice even though it generally works.

I try and write down everything I can think of for the next day, as Amalthea suggested. Then I know I won't forget it and I can drop off better. I love to have the radio on quietly. I use my IPOD (podcasts) if DH is there, but when he isn't I have the 'big' radio on.I've heard the beginning of some of the podcasts loads of times, but not the end!

thanks for the advice,some of the things I have tried, reading a boring book, didnt work very often, because I started getting interested in the book! Ive found the dawn simulator, set on sunset mode helps sometimes,I tried a white noise machine by the bed ,but found that gave me a headache. One thing that did work was using an electric fan, it made a pleasent soothing noise that often helps me to sleep, Sadly its not much use in the middle of Winter.

For me I get up for a relaxed hour or so and have something to eat and drink (nothing uplifting - sorry) whilst watching the tele, then go back to bed. Not the best I know, but it works for me - I then dont worry too much about not being asleep and that seems to help.

Else just lying in bed very relaxed and still (possibly half asleep) seems to be better than tossing and turning all night - try a hypnotic relaxation tape.

I think the biggest thing about not sleeping is trying not to worry about it! I know this sounds silly perhaps.

I have had erratic sleep patterns over the years for no apparent reason. I don't regard it as insommnia, because I try not to let it bother me, most of the time it doesn't. SOmetimes I can have weeks of lack of sleep, I try and go with the flow and eventually I will sleep better. I'm sure that a positive attitude in this will help

I dont think it sounds silly at all, sometimes I can covince myself that, it doesnt matter if I cant get to sleep and suddenly, I wake up after 6or 7 hours sleep.

I think it's the best attitude Purple. My OH has really bad sleep patterns. Only sleeps about 2-3 hours a night. Has been for all sorts of tests and nothing has helped. I have said to him loads of times that it is because he is going to bed and thinking 'i'm not going to be able to sleep' so he doesn't.

Can you imagine our situation......
We couldn't be further apart in our sleeping patterns. Him for 3 hours and me for 23 hours!!!

I have been told a mug of warm milk with a bit of honey and a small piece of dark real chocolate helps you sleep and also almonds.

I have alot of trouble sleeping at this time of the year.I take Amitriptyline tablets and find they help with many of my sad symptoms and also help me get a good nights sleep.

I used to take Prozac for my sad symptoms, I felt a lot better during the day, but found it completly impossible to get any sleep, so changed my medication and so far im ok,

I take paxil all year but summer is a small dose and fall it is upped but the 4 weeks after upping it is not finished yet so my sleep is crap. Have you ever hear of anyone getting sad after deppresion from surgery.
