I read recently somewhere on this forum about alternatives to AD's - and I wrote the name down but have mislaid it and i cannot remember in which topic I came across it. I know 5HTP was mentioned among others but there was one I had never heard of which began with an r - something like Rhodian or something similar can somebody help please
Thanks

There are all kinds of alternatives, depending on what the root causes of your problems are. Look a page back or so; there's a topic caled Nutrition Info that contains some ideas. If you are certain that SAD is your problem then the first thing I would recommend is a light box.

Hope this helps.

I ve had a good look on the internet, sadly I couldnt find anything similar. Not sure if you have considered st johns wort, quite a few people seem to like it, but it seems a minority have problems if they use it with a lightbox.

Will be ready and waiting. I can't keep my eyes open after massage. Was hoping for one this week, but my friend has gone to the USA so isn't working for a couple of weeks. She's brilliant, I trained with her. Went somewhere else and was disappointed, so won't go there again.

Exeter area.
By the Purplelvy you could start a holiday business offering weekend retreats with massage ensuite with all the necessary items for us. Dawn simulator in all the bedrooms, a coin operated vending machine with a choice of Prozac,Citalopram, St Johns Wort, 5 HTP and, now I know how to spell it, Rhodiola Rosea. Also chocalate bar machine for us chocoholics. Instead of calling the business SAGA for the over 50's you could call it SADA and approach the Dragons Den for the necessary investment. I am sure Theo or Peter Jones would be interested!

There is a lot of contributors with a problem "coming off Citalopram".I used to be on Prozac in the winter but have gone over to Citalopram and prefer it to Prozac.
although at the start of taking it i was Knackered for several weeks but found things improved later and then by April I feel a lot better and come off them easily.
I dont understand though why one AD is better than another.Has anybody else tried both Prozac and Citalopram and what are there views as a matter of interest

I have tried prozac and citalopram, there didnt seem to be a great difference between them, both tablets treated my sad during the day but stopped me sleeping at night.

I am on Paxil because I couldn't handle the other stuff. I don't sleep good at night. Go to bed at 10pm and am awake at 4:30am. If I nap I feel worse.

Im taking Amitriptyline this year, its certainly not perfect but helps me to get a good nights sleep. Ive found if I sleep well, I can cope better, I still have some of the sad symptoms but they are bearable.

I seem to have the same problem as everybody else who takes these AD's - sleeping . If only I could sort out the sleep problems life would be as perfect as i could get it

Sorry Im abit out of sync, just found you all...

Cant help with the medication chat. But I wanted to add to your massage discussion earier.

Whilst on holiday I had a swedish massage. No chance of dropping off there! I did enjoy it (ARGGGGHHH), although he didnt do anything to help my SAD, he did help my cold feet. Apparently Ive got loads of knots in my calves. Now my freezing feet get warm within minutes, not an hour, in bed. How amazing is that. Something to do with blood circulation. I am sleeping better too, so perhaps it has helped my SAD.

I have cold feet and it all has to do with circulation. But I think it has to do with sad as well because the hands and fingers go numb.

Well, SGL, my swedish massage certainly helped my freezing feet.

Still get pins/needles in my fingers several times a night. I used to think it was due to tendonitis, then I thought it was a trapped elbow nerve, now I think its to do with fluid retention, as I notice it more if im feeling a little bloated. hmmmmm

Some very interesting points there. I also suffer, well not suffer but I get cold feet and the ends of my fingers - sometimes in really cold weather the ends of my fingers go white where the blood is not circulating. Wonder if it is a sort of side effect of SAD.I have managed to "extract" a scrip. from the doc for some mild sleeping tabs, I know they dont like giving you them - i have only tried half the recommended dose on the nights which I know will be a problem which does relax me and I get a better nights sleep without awaking every hour and wake up feeling a little better but still feeling knack..ed
