hey,
its so annoying- i cant concentrate on anything! i would not consider myself one of the smartest people around but when the winter hits i actually feel like an absolute airhead who everyone is making fun of? i dont understand why i am depressed as i took antidepressants two weeks into autumn. i know they can take up to six weeks to kick in!! i also feel that nobody here in ireland is aware of s.a.d!

I can't remember words..... or names of people or things.

I was feeling fine when I started taking antidepressants in mid-September. I wondered a.....................darn, I just boiled the custard over in the microwave!..................

I wondered about the wisdom of this and I know that some of you will hard to accept this type of prophylactic (is that the word?) treatment, but the reality of it is that on the anniversary of going off work last year, I was feeling pretty well OK. A bit tired, but generally OK.

I took a self assessment to check for current level of depression and score was on the absolute bottom level for moderate depression. I think this is because of all the extra sleeping, change in appetite etc etc. This time last year the doc did an assessment which put me at the bottom of the severe depression category. OK it wasn't the same test, but I would have thought that there must be something that can be read into it. I was also not able to cope with work and kept crying all over the place!

All I can say is that the treatment seems to be right for me at the moment, but only time will tell.

Hasn't anyone got anything better to do than make fun of you sunmagnet? that's a shame. Medication does take some time to kick in. If you aren't getting a therapeutic effect soon, it might be time to pay your doc a visit. Maybe he/she will recommend a higher dose (if you are getting some effect) or a different form of medication.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi Sunmagnet

Welcome to the forum. I was on prozac but found it didn't help me at all. In fact it made me a lot worse.

Wellbutrin isn't licenced in the UK either. There have been a lot of problems with it in the US so don't think they will licence it here.

I am the same as the other guys, forgetful, clumsy, can't remember how to spell and forget words for obvious things. I work in accounts and it's an absolute nightmare trying to concentrate in the winter.

I also wanted to chime in that I feel really stupid in the winter-time also. I think it's because I'm just so tired all the time.

Glad you could join us here.

I believe that not all of NZ is exempt from SAD, Suzie. Have a Kiwi friend and I'm sure he said that when he lived on south Island he was affected.

Got a book on SAD at home. Talks about all the different antidepressant tablets. Now for the science bit - it says that 'Wellbutrin is thought to influence dopamine and norepinephrine.
Advantages of Wellbutrin are that it is energising and not associated with weight gain, sexual side effects, lethargy, or sedation. It may be helpful when lethargy and sluggishness are a prominent part of the picture. Side effects in the SAD studies included dry mouth, nausea, constipation, flatulence, and weight loss, which occurred in a small proportion of people. An uncommon but disturbing side effect is the occurence of seizures. Therefore, people with a history of seizures would be advised to avoid this drug'. - Winter Blues by Norman E Rosendale MD.

For the non-science bit - I bet its too expensive an option!!!

Sunmagnet/Me....

I went to my gp's armed with the Norman Rosenthal info and asked if I could try Wellbutrin as she is always open to discussion.

The reasons why it is not licenced in the UK is because one of the side effects is it is an appertite suppressant. There were reports from the US that there had been a number of deaths due to depressed people starving themselves because of this. For this reason they will not licence it for depression in the UK. Interestingly though it is licenced for people who wish to give up smoking . I can only assume it is to stop the craving for smoking and to prevent them gaining weight as a side effect of quitting.

What a shame, with my terrible weight gain over the winter time, I reckon it would have been ideal .

Maybe I should start smoking in order to give up!! - just kidding.

yeah i bought that book also-great book! the worst thing i found about sad is that before i was diagnosed i didnt know what was going on! i was extremely suicidal nd was admitted to the psychiatric unit but i managed to get out the next day by telling the doctors that my parents would take care of me! i was afraid one of my colleagues at work who was on work placement in the hospital would see me! i dont wanna die but i often think to myself that if i dont get the right medication i will have to put up with this for the rest of my miserable life!! i feel like im gonna die young-i have images of me being homeless!my mind becomes so distorted in the winter!

My light box, my dawn simulator, prozac when I am especially low. But I do find that exercise is fantastic too. Not when you are travelling there, nor when Im doing it, but afterwards.

My lightbox and I have the most tremendous relationship. It promises to wake me up, I promise to take the kids to school. Once up and out, the gym is right next to the school car park. People grab me as I walk past, so there is no escape. I was once told that the times I didnt want to do exercise, were the times I would benefit more from it. I have always remembered it.

But you know, Spain sounds fantastic too, if I could only manage to get the energy to pack for the whole family and travel. We all seem to get the dodgy tummy, so I again spend more time inside looking after sick kids. Last time it was chicken pox too. What a holiday.
