Hello there. ;)
I am a student in the last year of my degree at university. Unfortunately does it feel like my S.A.D is hindering me from doing my very, very best, simply because I can not get up in the mornings..even though I have a powerful lamp-box on a timer to wake me up. I would be so grateful if anyone have good suggestions on how to get up in the dark mornings.

HI welcome to the forum, a proper sad lightbox would be a good idea, though they are quite expensive, prices start around Ģ130. In your post you said you have a lamp box on a timer, is it a proper sad lamp, if it is you can use it during the day for about an hour. Other things you can do is, try to get as much sun as you can, (not easy at this time of the year). Exercise is always useful, im always told I dont get enough.Have you been diagnosed with sad? It might be a good idea to visit your doctor. Last but not least, keep posting on the forum. We are a very supportive group with lots of ideas that may help.

Remembering my days in college, are you getting to bed at a fairly regular time?

It can be a damper on social life, but with SAD, I really had no say in the matter. I'd just be so exhausted. I remember thinking I had mono when I was in college and so wiped-out all the time.

Hi, there and thanks for your friendliness. ;) I have been diagnosed with sad for many years now. My lightbox is a very powerful one, bought on this web site. (I have bought a timer separately in an electrics shop) It just does not seem to wake me up..I start thinking `I need more sleepīand `I donīt want to wake upī, roll over and fall asleep again, even though I have slept plenty. I try to exercise regularly but have not had any time lately because of school work.. It is frustrating because I know it helps. Wonder what to do..?

Hi Little Mermaid,

My last year of uni was a bad one for me last winter. I just wondered if you'd spoken to any of your tutors about the problems you're having? I ended up going to mine last year and filling out extenuating circumstances. My tutors were all dead nice and asked if there was anything they could do! I didn't really know what to say to that, but it helped to know that they understood why I wasn't performing to the best of my ability.

Hi, I've typed a longer post but managed to lose it!

Your mornings sound like mine used to be. A lightbox is great but for me didn't solve the mornings. I would lay in bed counting down the hours to when I could get back to my bed again - sound familiar? I also felt like I had been dragged into conciousness each day and would be very drowsy and headachey.

I bought a dawn simulator from Lumie -the cheapest one which is around fifty quid and it's changed my mornings. I still don't like getting up but I don't feel anywhere near as dreadful as I used to.

Do a bit of research about how they work and give it ago - or perhaps ask Father Christmas for one!

Hi there, I'd say get a dawn simulator as well! I still feel like rolling over & going back to sleep sometimes but I dont wake up in such a bad mood as I dont get that horrible fright when the alarm goes off! When I wake, I make myself sit up in bed, put the TV & my lightbox on & sit for 20-30mins before getting up. It makes mornings a lot easier for me!

Ive got the dawn simulator too. My only problem is that Ive found that If am particularly tired I seem to automatically turn over whilst asleep and duck my head under the covers!!!!

What I used to do is put an alarm which was utterly annoying on the otherside of the room, so I had to get out and turn it off. Put my light box on and read a mag or do something, glancing at the box from time to time. I do not put the radio on anymore as that seems to whisk me back off the never-never land.

I use my dawn simulator next to the bed, and just in case I dont wake up, Ive got a radio alarm tuned to radio5 to go off 10 mins later, and so far I have always woken up.

Me, I've always done that with the alarm on the other side of the room... Only problem is, I have now got into the habit of being half asleep when I get outta bed to turn it off, then I just get back into bed again! Totally daft...
Think I'll try hiding it tonight...
