I got my light box today and was very excited about it. I used it for 30 mins this morning according to the instructions but I felt really hyper and manic afterwards with loads of energy and felt like I could have gone outide and run for miles! It actually made me feel quite agitated. Could it be because it's the first time I used it? Or maybe because it was a sunny morning anyway. Do you need to reduce the time of the lightbox if it's a sunny day?

Hi nicky, glad you have started using your lightbox. When I first started using mine, I felt a little odd,so cut it down to about 15mins then slowly built up the time over a couple of weeks. If you can get out on a sunny day, its just as good, if not better than using your light.

Thanks Paul, I'll try that. I used it for 25 mins today and felt much less agitated than yesterday but still a bit odd. Also went out for a long walk in the sunshine, natural sunlight beats anything.

I find I can only use mine for 20 mins in the morn, or I get really tired, like valium tired. Mine is a rarer possible side effect, but yours is typical of too much for you.

YOu need to be about arm's length away and not stare at it directly. Sit under it at an angle that would mimic the sun somewhat above you and do something else and just glance up sometimes. I have mine above my laptop and I'm sitting under it now as I type.

It can take awhile to get the timing right. If I find myself ready to fall asleep near supper, I give myself another 10 mins, just long enough to wake up again, but not long enough to get that drugged tired (or in your case wired feeling).

Thanks guys, really helpful advice :-) I've cut the time down to 20mins and I'm feeling much better for it. I've also got a dawn simulator now which is really helping me to get out of bed and I actually feel energetic in the morning, don't think that's ever happened to me before!

Ahh, I've noticed I get tired if I use my visor on timer for its maximum of 45 minutes. I'm OK up to the half hour mark but "valium sleepy" is a good description!

I don't seem to have the problem with my lamp but as I've said before I don't thiink I sit properly enough in front of my lamp to get maximum benefit from it.

Hadrian/Piglet,

I'm glad you mentioned you get tired from too much light too. You are the first to share that odd symptom w/ me, and I often feel the odd man out since it seems if there is a bizarre and atypical symptom, well won't I just be the one to have it. I also don't get the hyper appetite and carb cravings most every w/ SAD gets. If severely depressed, I totally lose my appetite, can't taste or enjoy my food and have to choke enough down to keep myself going.

Hi everyone. Not posted yet this year. Having a good winter so far, concentration and co-ordination down the drain but not anxious or depressed (YET). Just had 2 weeks in Florida so didn't have delayed the effect of the clocks going back so expecting it tyo catch up with me soon (as it aways does).
I have been meaning to ask advice about too much light. I have a lightbox on my desk at work and as I am in an office on my own I regularly forget it is on and leave it on all morning. If I switch it off the room looks really dark and depressing as there is no daylight in there at all. Anyway, I don't get any symptoms from this i.e. don't feel wired or sleepy but I have wondered if I could be doing any long-term damage to myself or desensitising myself to my lamp. In addition I use my visor once I get home for 30 to 45 mins.
what do you think?

Ali, I think if it ain't broke you don't need to fix it.
