Hi everyone,
Crystal,s mum here again. She has just been through 8 days of fighting back the symptoms of SAD . Out jogging, making a dress for a christmas function, going to yoga and meditation which all seemed to help. I was able two weeks ago to treat her and her twin sister as a birthday/christmas prezzy to a stay at a health spa which seemed to help considerably. She went back to work on monday half days and found this was enough as she is so tired then yesterday she came home and bang she seemed to go downhill again with negative thoughts and crying. I had to get her out of bed this morning and get her motivated telling her it,s only 4 hours to work and she has just gone.I think her downfall yesterday was skipping breakfast at home and eating later at work (only toast and some chocolate) then coming home exhausted not wanting lunch and just sleeping. I had to push her to eat in the evening then she went to bed very early. I am sure that she needs to have a routine and that helps especially with the light box. Does anybody else find that a routine helps evening though it is difficult to stick to it? Mozy

Hi Mozy. Wow I'm sure it's been said on here before but you are doing an amazing job to support Crystal! Sorry to hear she's having a rough time again but 8 days straight sounds really good to be ok! :)
I think a routine really does help but there will always be days where nothing seems to work.
Sorry, thats probably not much help but I hope she's ok soon!

Somewhere there is a link to a questionnaire that helps to identify when it is best to use light as we all have different cycles. I think Purpleivy posted it the other day, I think it was on an Apollo site?

I did the test a couple of years ago and ignored the results as it wasn't ideal for me, I redid it the other day and have now followed their suggestions and it does seem to be a bit better (although who knows what better is!).

I'm also pretty sure that my sad runs in cycles and is probably affected by my hormone levels. I don't keep a diary but I think if I did it would run in a four week cycle as I'm very aware I have good weeks and then a bad week. It might be worth you keeping track of how Cyrstal is over a couple of months?

Lastly, it is a learning curve and you'll see from the forum that we all have good and bad days and weeks and you just have to get through the bad ones in the knowledge that the good ones come and then the light months will be with us again. She needs to avoid getting too down in the bad weeks and just get through them.

I'm sure others will have comments that will help.

Hi Piglet,
Have just looked at questionnaire and will try it out with Crystal. It may be that she needs to use her light at specific times of day to get the full benefit. I think she is very impatient with seeing some improvement (understandably )and is also in a bit of denial that light therapy can help. We are off to doctors tomorrow morning and hopefully he may be able to offer some more help.

Sadly what most of us have come to understand is that there is no magic bullet, there is no cure for SAD. There are treatments that help (light, supplements, exercise) and there are coping strategies (routine etc) but nothing that will make it all go away.

For me, understanding this and accepting this has been a big part of making me a happier person.

Good luck x

I always find a routine very useful, because I work at school, I have a timetable with me all the time and even if I forget, which I often do,I just pull out my notebook and it tells me where I should be

I also find that a routine is good if you can stick to it. Sometimes you need someone to just get you moving

Oh Paul! I managed to go to my Tuesday lessons on Monday last week. THis meant that I missed one student out completely. and turned up an hour early for another! I felt really silly! Fortunately the one I missed was workingon an assignment that he could more or less manage on his own.

I sometimes still manage to look stupid, last week I thought I was helping in a mock exam, So I went to the hall and waited and waited, in the end i decided something was wrong, checked my notebook, I had the right day, checked again and realised I had the wrong week! what a dope.
