since the start of december when i stopped using my lightbox for a long weekend (i dont use meds)i have started to feel out of focus, finding it very hard to concentrate and staring into space quite a lot. i had an episode at my work were i got very worked up over an issue. i dont know if the episode at work has made me feel depressed and i am blaming the sad or is it the sad that is making me feel depressed and i am blaming the episode at work. all i know is dont get worked up at other times of the year and i felt the same last year. but the last thing i want to do is put everything down to the sad.
does anybody else feel out of focus?

Hi rangers, Ive found it very hard to concentrate in the last couple of weeks, I put it down to sad and christmas which I find very stressful. Do you mean you find it hard to focus your thoughts, or are you talking about eyesight?

Yes Rangers, I've been feeling very spaced out recently and finding it hard to concentrate. I didn't use my light box over the weekend either because I went away and it's too big to carry. Maybe there is a connection.

thanks for the replys folks, it really is comforting to know other people have the same condition, i find this forum can be better for advice etc than a visit to the gp.
paulst it is more my concentration than my eyesight, spaced out like nickyj14 says.
p.s i hate people seeing me in this state, this one of the main reasons i dont socialise at this time of year.

Make that three of us with the "can't work, just surf the internet"!

I also know entirely what you mean by "out of focus", it's the whole feeling of being detached from reality that I feel this time of year.

I have been so self-conscious of how people see me this time of year.

At church functions, tho, I must say I've been especially cheery and talking quickly... Probably because I use my light right before I go, but then again, I ask myself if some of the cheeriness isn't forced. I'd actually like to talk to the pastor there about what's going on with the SAD, so that I have a "local lifeline" of sorts. I'm just afraid it will change the way he thinks of me.

He's mentioned winter depression on three occassions during his services. Just a joke about troubles with the lights during the service and then he's prayed twice for people who struggle in the wintertime. I'd like to bring the subject up with him, but I've no idea how to and I'm terrified that I'll lapse into self-pity or crying while I'm talking about it. I feel vulnerable during church services anyhow (as a new Christian, really). So, it's easier to be quiet about SAD than it is to just come out and say it.

I really just hate feeling alone here. I have another friend who knows about my SAD, but I try not to talk about it much. She and I are still just getting to know each other... I don't know why, but I feel like my true feelings are a "horrible secret" that I have about myself.

Amalthea
Don't worry to much the pastor will understand and be there for you. That is part of there job. In regards to the horrible secret you can talk to all of us because we know how you feel

I find it very difficult to concentrate on anything during the winter months. This last fortnight have been particularly bad. Memory is horrendous too.

Don't know if I had a manic episode from using the light this morning or not, but now it seems to have passed.

There was a lady sitting in front of me on the trolley and I LOVED her haircut. All the sudden, I wanted to change my haircut! I was listening to some really upbeat country music, too. Neither of those things sound like me - esp. this time of year. But the haircut might do something for my self-esteem, so I'm still considering it.

Sadly, the little burst of energy was short-lived this morning.

Wait, erm, what were we talking about?

My memory is terrible at this time of the year, its embarrasing when I work with students all through the year, then suddenly forget their names.

I can't remember alot of things this time of year and I have to write them down. I have pink notes everywhere even to water the plants.
