SGL I have the book. Bought it last year I think and it is extremely informative. You can pop in and out of it too instead of having to read all of it at once. It is a good buy. There is also a book called SAD for dummies out now. Don't know what that will be like but might get it to see if it's any good.

No book here either, don't think it's even been dispatched from Amazon yet. I guess it must be because it's just after Christmas, but it's the time we need it most!

I got the book at the weekend.Really enjoyed it! He's a warm and interesting writer and, unlike many doctor's books, it was very easy to read and understand. A few of the main points that interested me were the possible causes of SAD, the links between SAD and creativity (he posits that Emily Dickenson, TS Eliot, Handel and Gustav Mahler were all sufferers), and the possible genetic component (which I've often suspected as my mum has SAD also).

I think the best thing for me, though, was the succinct chapter on advice for family and friends. It means that I can give the book to them and help them to understand things I've always found difficult to explain. For instance, that they don't have to do anything specific, just be there as company if I need them (one of the case studies talks about wanting people to accept her just sitting in a corner solemnly reading a magazine -I completely relate to that!), that there's nothing personal about me withdrawing from them, and that it's not their responsibility to make me feel better (which can be a big problem for me as people always seem to think that they can 'fix' me, and then get a bit annoyed when it doesn't work).

Enjoy the book SGL and Nicky, and I would really recommend the book to everyone who suffers from SAD, or have friends or relatives who suffer from it.

I ordered Seasonal Affective disorder for dummies a few days ago. I'm sure it won't be as good a read as Winter Blues but I thought it might be easier for my family to understand. Will let you guys know what it is like.

I am about half way through the book. It tells alot but there is only a bit about reverse sad symptoms in it. I should help most of you very much. The Doctor is very down to earth.

I got my Seasonal Affective Disorder for Dummies yesterday. There is nothing in it that you won't find in Winter Blues so don't waste your money on it guys. It is very easy to read and goes into different mood disorders and helps to distinuish between these and SAD. About diffent types of treatment and how to prevent relapse. Alot of it is based on CBT really.

Personally, I think Winter Blues is a better buy.

I used to read my Winter Blues book, whilst I was taking my light in bed in the morning! Lots of interesting snipets in there, but most you will already know. - Recommended though.

I just wish he had called it something different, as the name Winter Blues just seems to trivalise SAD to me. I see SAD as a deeper version of the more common Winter Blues.

Perhaps he called it that to sell more books. I would have hoped that someone with his experience would understand the difference.

....perhaps its me getting stroppy over no reason again.

What do you think?

Happy reading.

I think you are right he should have call it something else. Just the title alone makes you feel sad and blue.

Is the Winter Blues book you're all talking about the one by Norman Rosenthal? If not, who is it by and where can I get it? Thanks.

Yes, it is by Norman Rosenthal. I agree, Winter Blues is supposed to be the less severe form of SAD isn't it? Maybe he just wanted to make it accessible to more people. It's amazing that he was involved in the first experiment on light therapy, it's such an interesting book.

Nobody wants to think they have a "Disorder" so they probably won't be able to sell the book.

Everybody and their brother thinks they get the "blues" in the winter. When you try to explain what you go through to folks, you hear, "Oh, I get the winter blues, too."

So, maybe it's meant to capture a wider audience. Just a thought. It does sound more trivial, I agree.

I think so too Amalthea, everyone thinks they have winter blues. I've heard lots of people say they think they have SAD too, but I think that's winter blues for most of them, just feeling a bit fed up.

I don't feel they really understand the problem at hand. They come out with oh I need the sun to. But they don't realize just how much We need the sun.

I know SGL, I feel the same. Even the people closest to me don't seem to really understand and think that everyone feels 'a bit down' in the winter.

I feel why bother talking to them or trying to explain things because they just won't understand anyway.
I got my nails done today and atleast the girl that does my nails understands. She said its like there is two different people. Winter me and summer me is what she called it.
She tried to make me laugh but I wasn't in the mood. Snowing and dull outside.
