i find this forum can be more beneficial than a visit to my gp( considering my gp did not know about light therapy),and what i am interested in is how s.a.d effects people's sleep patern. i know the normality for s.a.d sufferers is that they sleep a lot during winter and i know from reading "winter blues" that the reverse could also happen.
sometimes in different times in the year i probably have the tendency to blame everything on s.a.d but since the start of december it has been a totally different ball game!. it feels like i do not have a bodyclock and my mind/body does not have a cycle of getting tired at night and awake in the morning. it started of with broken sleep but now i am at the stage although i feel tired that i cannot get to sleep until i am exhausted which can be about four or five oclock in the morning, and considering i get up at work at six oclock i am totally shattered all day which i think leads to mental problems along with catching the cold and flu because i feel run down. incidently in the summer when its scorching hot i can survive on four or five hours sleep and feel great then a couple of days(maybe even a week or two) after a hot spell i can sleep for ten hours easy and never enjoy sleep as much in my life. but come december i feel like a total insomniac.
i was wondering how many people on this forum (if any) have what kind of sleeping disorder related to s.a.d.
any feedback would be hugely appreciated.

My SAD routine starts in late october, when my sleep routine slowly changes. I liken it to not having 24 hours in my day. As the days shorten, my personal day gets shorter. So after a number of weeks, Im totally out of sync with society.

I tend to want to nap in the afternoon, else cram myself with carbs to stay awake.

Come teatime Im immensely tired, and generally want to be in bed by 8.00pm ideally. Physically though this is not possible as this is my busiest time with the kids bed routine. I normally drop off to sleep when they read to me - not quite what it is supposed to be like!!

I seem to get into a habit of waking up at around 3.00am precisely, and not being able to get back off. What is really strange is that - one early morning I actually imagined the clock face time in my head but could not decifer which was the large and small hands. When I opened my eyes the hands were in the exact place. So have decided that I have actually got a brilliant accurate clock in my head, but must try to sort out its morning alarm system.

Strangely, if I can get back off to asleep, its generally when everyone else in the house has just woken up. Totally insociable.

In the summer, I still get tired, but I can enjoy life normally and sleep well, that is until a few grey days come together, then my sleeping patterns move gradually back to my winter routine again.

So your quite normal here.

I have the same as you ranger. I want to sleep but can't. I take Imovane to fall asleep but still wake at 3:30am to 4:30am. I go to bed at 10pm. My sleep pattern is way out of wack in the winter but the summer I can sleep from 10pm to 7:30am. It has been very hard in Dec. Today I phoned the GP and asked her to give me something different. She will let me know tomorrow with that one. She first wanted to send me to the head doctor to see if I was bipolar but I don't have up and down moods and the last time I went all he did was up the meds.

I did find a site at Canada.com that says people can have reverse symptoms. You can check it out and see. It is way down the page.
http://bodyandhealth.canada.com/channel_condition_info_details.asp?disease_id=199&channel_id=11&relation_id=10899&rot=2
This is the site I was talking about.

i have just returned from the doctors and he very reluctantly prescribed me temazepam to get to sleep. the doctor said that they are highy addictive and he does not want to add to my problems, so he has given me fourteen to last me the rest of the winter and to use them wisely. he originally wanted to prescribe me amyltriptaline(sp) to get to sleep because they are an anti-depressant as well. i did visit a s.a.d clinic last year and the specialist recommended i take anti-depressants along with light therapy. he sent a letter to my gp explaining this and my gp wants me to take them. but i am scared to take anti- depressants.
also since december this insomnia had become unbearable so on the odd occasion i bought myself night nurse to help me get to sleep. the night nurse did help me get to sleep but i also woke up about 3:30 am, how crazy is that considering both of you wake up about the same time.
p.s thanks again for the replies and i hope the rest of the winter goes as well as it can for the both of you.

I know this one:-

Night Nurse is an over the counter medication that 'relieves tickerly cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, shivers and so aids restful sleep, all in one little measure - marvellous , the one in one night time cold treatment by B......s'.

I know Im sad. I remember, and obviously quoted, the advert from when I was a kid 35+ years ago. Mum never bought it though.

So its not at all what you think SGL.

I didn't know what it was so I looked it up on the net and found comic books and nurses that say with you at night. Was just wondering.
