I have just been to the hospital as yet again my eyes have swollen so much that I cant see ( so apologies if I mis spell anything)This has happened for the last 5 years.I also get so depressed and even after a long sleep am tired.I can't bare to be among people at the moment and found Christmas frustrating.A nurse has told me about SAD and my GP is if the old fashioned ways and told me I need to Buck my ideas up and get on with it.Any advise would be gratefully received.

Teri find a New GP or go in and tell him tha buck my ideas up is jus not good enough. I know it is hard to stand up for yourself but with your health you have to.

Sounds very much like SAD to me. Personally I've never had a diagnosis from my GP, I don't feel the need for one.

After noticing a pattern after a number of years and a friend of mine who's a therapist pointing the pattern out to me I tried a lightbox and it's not too much of an exaggeration to say that it changed my life during the winter.

Prior to the lightbox (3 winters in now) I was always ill at the end of October - usually something viral that I couldn't shake off and I was always ill at Christmas as I was just exhausted. I think that SAD has a lowering effect of an immune system because everything is such hard work and your body is contstantly fighting everything.

Personally, I'd try a lightbox and see if it helps - Lumie do a 21 day money back trial, if it doesn't help you then send it back and at least you'll have tried.

You should ensure that you continue to see your GP to deal with your health issues if you feel the need.

Good luck!

I agree with sgl, telling you to buck up your ideas is a terrible thing to say to anyone suffering from sad or any kind of depression.

Teri, sounds like you have a very unsympathetic GP, that's not very professional either. Definitely get a new GP. Good luck!

Teri - I spotted this discussion because I have a damaged immune system. But I saw your comment about your GP. His or her comments belong to the last century. If they can't be supportive, dump them.

Yes, most of us, including your GP might indeed need to "buck our ideas up", but the fact is you are unwell and need support - not a finger-wagging lecture. You stand up for yourself - shop around, there are probably other doctors around who will be able to give you the care you need. Good luck.
