I have not been diagnosed, but i am sure i have SAD. here in cleveland we get several months of blah outside. I would like to buy a light box, but with so many choices and features, what should i get? How exactly do i use it? How close to the light do i need to be? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Amber

Hi Amber, any light box you get should have a minimum brightness of 10,000 lux. You should also think about whether you need it to be portable, will you use it at work?. If not, you might want to get one which you need to use for less time. I have a 'daylight' light box and I only have to use it for 30 mins, which is very handy before I go to work as it is not small enough to carry around. I have to be 12 inches away from mine and it stands on legs so I can put my laptop underneath it and use that while I sit in front of the box. Have you looked at the different light boxes on this Lumie website yet?

i looked through these to get an idea, but i'm in the States. This was the only forum i found so was just trying to get some info. do you know of a few diff brands tto select from? are all boxes that have 10000 created equal? I wont use it at work. Is thirty minutes the standard amount of time? Does it have to be in the morning? Also, do you know if the sunrise smulator is used in addition to a lightbox? Again, thanks, Amber.

I don't know much about the different brands, but if you won't use it at work it might be best to choose one that you use for less time. I think 30 mins is probably the minimum time. Some take 90mins or more, it just depends what would suit your lifestyle best. I don't think it really matters which one you choose as long as it's 10,000 lux. Some people on this forum have the bright box lamp and find it good, that's a 90 minute one and you can find it on Lumie. I have a one called 'day light'.

Dawn simulators just help you to get up in the morning, I use it in addition to the light box. The light box is most effective if you use it in the morning, it sets you up for the day. If you use it too late in the day it can keep you awake at night. Hope that helps.
