I've just acquired a 10k lumen box which advises 1 hour per day at 20cm or 2 hours at 50cm. Following a suggestion in the forum I positioned the lamp just above my laptop. This was great - so much so that I would like to use it for longer periods as a desk light. I'm retired and use the PC for several hours most days.

Is it advisable to limit the exposure ? I have tinted spectacles
which I could use if this would enable me to use it more often.

Glad to have found the site - now even more time on the PC !

Hi Coventry Kid, welcome to the forum. I think if you use the light box for too long it could make you feel quite hyper and if you use it too late in the day it can keep you awake. Not sure about the tinted specs. Maybe just trial and error, see how you feel.

Coventry, used to live round there, not now now, further north... my days are shorter here in winter, and SAD tends to be more intense - but hey good to hear from you.

I suppose my response is similar to Nicky's.

I really can get extremely hyper if taking too much light, and I have to be careful when i take it because it does keep me awake.

I also find it very additive (not medically addictive) as it gives such a warm comforting glow to my life it is very hard to turn it off. When its time to turn it off I tend to leave the room as, the room and, my aura seem so cold then(hope you know what I mean!). Its easy to overrun, especially if you are doing the same thing (like being on a computer) as time can fly by.

As far as tinted glasses are concerned, Im not a medical expert but an aware that anything that reduces the light to the back of the eye will reduce the effectiveness of your box, bet you know that already.

Take it steady, and see how you go.

I personally do not need to be infront of the light for that long. I manage about half to three-quarters of an hour with it in front of me whilst reading.

So what I suppose I am trying to say is:- the lightbox is a treatment, listen to your body, and whilst its a good idea to take your light whilst on the computer - would you notice when youve had enough?

Enjoy your lightbox chuck, and lots of love to my home county too

Hi Coventry Kid,

I found that 3-4 hours a day was I needed, less than that and I began to notice a difference.

I now use my lightbox at work and keep it on all day. During that time I am sat at a computer for 95% of the time and some days the light stays on for about 6-7 hours, in fact now others in my office complain when I turn the light off because they think the office feels cold and dull without it!

Anyway, I have not experienced any adverse effects using it so long each day.

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning a longer session today. To a dull 75 year old the thought of getting "hyper" is attractive particulary if I can do it while finishing off m tax self assessment. Thanks again.

I think it's all trial-and-error. I don't experience ill effects from using the light longer than recommended. If I keep my energy level up, I'm less likely to deal with depression... but I don't think I've ever been manic or anything like that.

I just have to remember to turn the light off AT LEAST an hour before I plan to go to bed, or else I'll have trouble sleeping.

Oh Im terrible, too much light and im off thinking Im capable of running a marathon (there really is just no way!). I plan such great plans that I cant do them or I wear myself out trying. I also cant keep on one subject when chatting, I dot around various subjects, and the other person doesnt know what on earth im going on about!!

A good experience, but I tend to wear myself and everyone else around me out. I then have the up-down-up-down mood scenario, so I have to be careful.

Tax assessments Yuk. I think you are very brave to do them with SAD, you are right, I think id need alot of light to see me through that. Id probably end up crying. In the summer it would be a doddle to do though.
