Hello - I am new to the forum. I have suffered with SAD for a number of years and for the last five have controlled it with my lightbox, however in November I had to visit my doctor as I was not coping at all. He put me on prozac, which has worked to some extent ( I am much better taking it but still feel "out of focus")and he said I would need to stay on it until March.

When I went back to see him last week he said that I should stay on it for another 6 months to ensure it has worked properly. I explained that I usually feel back to normal by the end of March but he feels it would be better to stay on it until at least end of May beginning of June.

He is an excellent doctor in terms of his understanding of SAD but I am a bit worried about the length of time I need to remain on Prozac.

Any comments?

This was what my doc wanted me to do the first year I knew him. It's normal procedure to have a certain period on a med in order to minimise the chances of recurrence, but that is for depression. After the first spring, he realised that I really did have SAD (he was new to me) and thatthe normal me didn't need help through the summer. Discuss it with him.

In addition, after a few years he found it was inevitable I would need help through the winter, so he suggested starting before I felt really bad. Although I'm a little low at the moment, I'm having a much better winter this year, when everyone else seems to be having a bad time.

Hi ziggy, most doctors prefer that you stay on the medication for at least six months, as purplelvy said, its to reduce the chance of becoming depressed again.

I know a guy on prozac. He seems happy most of the time but i get the feeling that it makes him weak.
You know that feeling you sense from some people sometimes?

Thanks for the replies. I think I will stick it out for another six months because anything has got to be better than feeling how I did this winter!
