Self induced SAD

I am coming to terms with having SAD, I recently bought a light box and I hope it does the trick.

Looking back over the past 2 years, I now realise my SAD was some what self inflicted, I moved from an east/west facing sun drenched house to a north/south facing very dark bungalow. At the back of our new home the bedrooms face south, so no sun light first thing in the morning. The living quarters face north, again never gets any direct sunlight coming into the rooms at all. Looking back I now realise that my SAD problem started, very shortly after we moved.

A lot of my spare time is spent playing internet computer games, I used to do this mostly in a conservatory, but after the move, I used a room with 1 small window with very little, if any sun light.

I won’t bore you with all the situations that arose from slowly becoming an SAD sufferer to the realisation and final admittance of being an SAD sufferer, but after speaking with many fellow gamers and making note of which rooms they use and the amount of sun light in each room. I discovered them to be mostly darkening bedrooms or small out of the way hither too unused dark rooms. After speaking with cyber friends and having learnt about SAD, I have discovered playing computer games often leads to some form of depression that may be linked to SAD due to a lack of sun light. So I feel it is indeed possible to unwittingly inflict SAD on to a person or even your self.

I am very angry, mostly with my self for having put my self and family through all of this, when it could have been so easy avoided or made less aggressive by simply being made aware of SAD and how it is brought on.

The cure here is not about buying a lamp and sitting in front of it each day, that is a short term remedy yes and indeed an aid to helping the situation, but what is really required is some changes to your life situation, and then look around you to see how you can help other avoid the onset of self inflicted or induced SAD. We need to make others aware of SAD and show them how to avoid its on set.

Hi Poo Bear and welcome to the site.

I'm not entirely sure that SAD can be self inflicted, it seems to be something that some folks are prone to and others aren't - a bit like asthma.

I would agree though that there are ways of living that are clearly better for those that have SAD and avoiding dark rooms and avoiding sitting in front of a PC or games console are probably a couple of them.

Many of us find that we are better if we eat well, sleep regularly and exercise regularly and I imagine if you're gaming all day or all night those things don't happen.

Many of us hold down jobs and manage households so are probably not living in the way that caused you a problem. I only wish the solution was as simple as getting out and doing more!

Sounds interesting to me.

I imagine that a lot of people could struggle if they dont see daylight for a number of days/weeks. So I suppose it could be possible to run the risk of developing SAD by staying indoors most the of time.

At least it seems as if you can solve your problem very simply. For the rest of us, its a little more difficult and almost impossible to budge!!

Poo Bear - I'm intrigued by the straightforwardness of the discovery that light deprivation in one's home is for me a self-served guaranteed mood plunger.

At the onset of winter two years ago I got quite desperate about many things, but I knew I wanted a to find a bright light home - however modest - but with views with a southfacing garden to maximise access to light. Fortune worked my way and we have this refuge to come to for half our working week.

Had we not done that, I would have had to move abroad - probably in mediterranean direction - to reduce the shortness of winter days and get a better share of light and warmth. That would have involved early retirement and a measure of poverty!

From May-December we were living in our temporary kitchen which had very low light... and a dark summer.

Our new extension has 4m wide windows that are almost 2m tall. I hardly use any other rooms in the house now. It's beautiful on a good day. I sit an watch the birds, or sometimes I just sit!

Why be angry with yourself for something you didn't know about?

You can be glad that you found an answer that works for you!

It would help to get the word out about SAD, but not all SAD is "self-inflicted." Some behaviors may put you more at risk for SAD, some cities are worse for SAD - there are a few variables which I hate to say my brain won't let me communicate... sigh... tired... going to bed.

Think I made myself worse when I was younger spending too much time indoors, but now I crave sunshine and the outdoors instead.
