Hi
I'm new here, i was diagnosed with SAD last winter but was unsure whether i had it or not. Today, feels like the first day of my winter though, it came on overnight, yesterday i was fine, i was bored but comfortable and confident but last night i woke up about 5 times during the night and today i feel completely different. I have no confidence, i feel completely in my head, i feel slightly panicky and i cannot concentrate for more than 10 seconds. does this sound like SAD? I've been depressed before so i'm kind of alert to it as soon as i had the bad sleep.

Also i have a technical question. Last winter i brought the Lumie desk lamp, it emits 10,000 lux at 19cm. Is this product safe to use at that distance for 30 min in a morning?

Thanks
Euan

Sounds similar spec to the Brightspark. When this was mt only lightbox, I used it for an hour in the morning and two hours or so when I got back from work.

Is that safe? Probably, I'm just as mad as I have ever been! ;)

Welcome Euan,
You mentioned the way you were feeling and if anyone feels the same way....the answer is yes. You are not alone even though you probably feel it went feeling so bad. SAD can be very cruel especially if you suffer bad symptoms. Lots of people get what we call winter blues but SAD is worse because one can have panic attacks, lack confidence, loww self esteem, crave sweet and carb foods, push loved ones away, feel suicidal etc....

The site is great because everyone supports each other. I suppose after a bad day and if I am feeling better the next, I forget how bad it was a the time (prob cause I don't want to remember) Feelings of guilt is another symptom of SAD. I feel drained after my bad night last night which meant my partner had a bad night too. I have been using my lightbox and taking 5-HTP (50 mg a night) so when I had a SAD attack last night (I call them SAD attacks!) I didn't know why because I have been doing the right things but thats the way sad is for people I suppose! We are all here when you need us and vice versa. Take care x

Hi Euan, wellcome to the forum!I find that this time of year one of the best things for me(aswell as light therapy, excercise etc) is giving up alcohol for a month or two-not that i'm a heavy drinker but i find that alcohol makes my symptoms much worse-usually one or todays AFTER i've had a drink.

Hi Euan,
I'm new too, so it's nice to meet a fellow Newbie.
I'm also starting to feel my symptoms now, although I was fine just a week or so ago.
Exercise is one of the best things, because it releases endorphins in the brain to make us happier (although I appreciate it's all relative). We have a treadmill at home which I use about 3 times a week at present. I never run - just a really brisk walk for about 20 minutes, sometimes along to some happy dance tunes, and I feel much better afterwards.
I'm also starting to find that I don't want fresh, healthy food - just starchy carbs, like noodles or mashed spuds with gravy. And don't put a salad in front of me! If I want veg in my diet at this time of year, I'll have a soup!
Hey-ho! Roll on Spring...

Hi Mrs Stan

I can relate to that.......

First signs that my SAD is kicking in, disrupted sleep and mashed potato by the bucket load......I feel so bloated this week!

Joking apart, I really love vegetables in the summer months but cannot stand the taste of them in the winter months. This was something I mentioned to my GP, it's like my whole taste in food changes, they even taste different to me. Does anyone else have this problem or am I just a bit weird. xx Kind responses please, feeling a little fragile at the moment lol

Hi ya all.

I find that I just can not be bothered with the preparation of vegetables particularly for an evening meal. But then, hey, Ive just realised I can not be bothered with prepared lettuce from a packet either ....... interesting.

You are right, they just dont taste the same. Rather have a rather tasty doughnut or those chocolate biscuits Ive kindly hid from the kids!!!!

It is also impossible to have a cup of tea without a sweet accompliment either... Hmmmmmmm

Im feeling the strain some days more than others. Particularly tired this evening. Did some Reiki on my son (who has migraines - which I am told can also be serotonum related!!!!!) but I nearly fell asleep whilst doing it!!!!!

Take care

Me x

I can't be ar$ed with salad at the moment, but it's something I usually enjoy. Not as bad with veg, managing a little bit of fruit, but not as much as usual.
