I noticed something interesting on my way home today. The sun was about to set but I felt this contentment... and I know I've had it before.

I think the golden, warm cast of the sun has something to do with it. These white lights aren't bad but somewhat harsh and yellowish lightbulbs don't do anything for me. I really think it has more to do with an orangish-yellow WARM glow. It's the same thing you get when the sun is coming up, too...

I wonder if that can be replicated and if it would have a favorable effect on us SADDies. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

Hi Amalthea,
I was brought up in a coastal town for the first 19 years of my life, and one thing I really miss is the glorious sunsets we used to get. Somehow, living inland, it isn't quite the same. I don't think I realised until then what a positive effect the sun has on our general wellbeing and state of mind.
I went out for a walk this weekend with my husband and just the warmth of the sun on my face made me smile a little, despite the fact that I had to put a woolly hat on my head to keep out the cold wind!
Let's hope for a cold winter with some frosty sunshine rather than dreary old wind and rain all the time eh?

I live in Pittsburgh, PA and we get much less sun in the wintertime than Harrisburg, PA on the other side of the state. We have a lot of "lake effect" weather which brings us a lot of cloudy days. Most of the time, our skies in the winter are a dull gray or dull white with cloud-cover.

We had a beautiful sunny day yesterday and I just felt so at ease. I'm hoping for a better winter this year.

Last year was awful for me, but I didn't know I had fibromyalgia, which caused a lot of pain and fatigue in the wintertime, particularly. Thank goodness this year I'll have some help. I am now being treated and I'm seeing a cognitive-behavioral therapist.

CBT worked a treat for me! My GP referred me onto it a couple of years ago, and I've deliberately kept all my notes so I can refer to them from time to time if I start feeling down.
Your fibromyalgia sounds awful but I'm glad you're getting it sorted. Do let us know how the CBT goes.
Take care...

Amalthea, good to hear from you...

I seem to remember last year or so I saw an article on the news where people with SAD were being tested with light. They were sat which a box in front of them with three different coloured lights. They had a dark blanket over their heads - rather like an old fashioned camera.

They were testing for colours that helped people with SAD. And I distinctly remember a person saying that the red/orangey coloured light made him feel loads better. It was said that other people had chose other colours which made them feel better.

So maybe you are on to something!

Take care Amalthea

I really thought about trying to find a way to add a warm golden/orange-tinge to the light. I can't think of a safe way to do it. Thin paper would risk starting a fire.

Hrm. They don't make colored flourescent tubes, do they?

Try doing a search for 'fluorescent tube filters'.
