I have a question for anyone who can answer???

I have been taking AD's for two weeks but not my lightbox.

Does anyone else on AD find that they don't need to also use their lightbox??

Cheers,

Hi,started using my light box back in September, did,nt feel comfortable using it so early, thought I would give it a try, really could not face another year like, last summer!Started on antidepressants for the last 2 months, try and keep on top of things, upped the dose after 1 month.Using light box as well, 10,000 lux,30 minutes every morning, on weekends have a treat! longer periods, even fall asleep in front of it,with the brightness still there even with my eyes closed, makes me feel like I was back on holiday, with 34 degree,s,sunbathing for at least 2 hours a day! sorry got carried away. I find it really beneficial, get up at 5.50am, feeling crap in the mornings, first reach for the AD,S,
then 30 minutes in front of the light box.Really trying hard not to have a time like last year. anything is worth a go Donna, good luck, maxak8

Thanks maxak8!
Well I get up at 6am for work each day anyway but wouldn't have time for the lightbox too but can use it each dinner time. Yes I used to fall a sleep in front of it year ago when I was getting up at 4am!!! No wonder really lol!!

Do you find exercise works at all? I am back into running twice a week then going to go back to the gym soon too!

In two weeks am going back to GP to review my AD. Am going to ask to increase from 10-20mg as the darker days are making me a wee bit panicky again!!

Good luck to you too maxak8!

I use medication, lightbox and sunrise lamp. Each has different benefits.

Hi Donna,
I am Donna too - lol. For me and at times, I feel that my lightbox works better than the antidepressants.

Hi the other Donna lol!

Personally I have found the lightbox wasn't enough to help in the end hence why I am now on AD's this year. Also I do get a lot of headaches in the winter which makes it difficult to use my lightbox. Its great that you find the lightbox is enough. Thats really good news Donna.

BTW, are you from the UK or the USA?

Take care,

Hi Donna,
I am from the USA. Where are you from? And, just to clarify, I am also on antidepressants and antianxiety medicines but sometimes I do not take them as I do not feel I need them but then usually after a couple of days, I go back on them. But, all in all, I think the lightbox just helps me more than the medicine.

I wonder why you get headaches in the winter? Is this related to SAD?

Anyway, have a great day!

I read in the great winter blues book that they found out low seratonin levels cause low blood sugar levels so maybe this is why I get headaches?

I am from the UK, has been a clear day today which is good!

Hi, to the two Donna,s,for me, my worst time is when I wake up in the morning and it is really dark!I think that is my low point, but once I get sorted and am able to have 30 minutes in front of my light box,I do feel brighter.I have increased my dosage up to 40 mg, citalipram, which I do find helpful. I still feel that I get a lot of benefit from using the light box as well.I am thinking of trying a sunrise lamp , this may help to make feel not so crap in the morning. There is a thought about getting headaches in winter, it is known that some antidepressants can give a person headaches,is this related just to taking ad,s in winter?,for the condition of SAD ?What has been explained to me about ad,s, is that that, even if you begin to feel better in yourself, it seems you may need to continue taking the prescribed dose? for at least 6 months? after to get your serotonin levels to a right balance? Myself I am not a medical expert but I will challenge what the medical profession diagnosis's is, to me it is a very personal level, after all we are all individuals and we cant always fit into there medical boxes,so sometimes they may be confused !I apologise for being a bit mysterious! I am male, and my age is 55,living in the UK,the last two years I found it very difficult, due to our particular seasons, so I am trying to consider different options, and I do find it very hard at moment. so thank you to you to you both,maxak8 x

Hey maxak8,

I totally agree with how you feel about our seasons. It would be easier if saddies could move to sunny climates for the winter but life is never as easy as that!

I do experience headaches every winter so quite normal for me! Would prevent me from using my lightbox too!

I agree the mornings are very difficult. Sometimes I want to cry because I just want to curl up and sleep for such a long time!

If only there was a cure!!!!

Well hope you get through this winter as well as you can, there are always going to be difficult and awful days but I don't know about you but I tend to forget them as soon as I have a good day again (prob want to forget it!!!)

Anyway, you take care and we will all keep supporting each other.

Hi maxak8,
I found that for me 30 minutes in front of the lighbox is not enough...I have to use it for several hours. But, you know, everyone is different. It is a little easier for me to sit in front of it longer as I work at home for a local hospital and while I am working, I have my lightbox right nnext to me and I glance at it at least once a minute and being in front of it for a longer duration of time really helps me a lot!! So, if you are able to, you may want to try experimenting with it but you also have to do it consistently in order for it to be beneficial. And, yes, I think a dawn simulator may also help you. I have one but I do not have it hooked up yet. Also, I have done a little on-line research on SAD and I have read that they use Wellbutrin a lot in the treatment of SAD as a prophylaxis, which I am on along with others and I really do think the Wellbutrin helps...maybe not a lot, but at this point, any help is better than nothing which I am sure you will agree with. And, just as a note, I am from the USA but my problem is that our basement is finished and I spend the majority of my time down in the basement and now even more so that I now work from home. So, whereas, the majority of SAD sufferers usually only have to deal with SAD in the winter, I am afraid that I have to deal with it year round, plus I also read where it can go into reverse in the summer, so aren't we having fun.

Anyway, I hope that you are doing well soon and take care and as I said above, if you are able to, try and sit in front of your lightbox for a longer duration of time for just an experiment!! Anyway, I hope this helps you!

I have been using light therapy for 13 years now, combined with anti-depressants and with both can keep on top of everything. I juse the Lumie bodyclock to wake me up every morning, then I have my main lightbox on for 30-40 minutes during which time I watch t.v. and put my make up on. In fact I am that used to it that I can't put my make up on anymore with ordinary light! When my granddaughter stays with me (she is 8) I find that she too wakes up with my bodyclock, the good thing being that it puts her in a much better mood than she normally is when she has to wake up. I have eye tests every year as my Mom has glaucoma, and have done since starting light therapy and have never had a problem.
