Hi

This winter has been my first “official” SAD winter though I may have had it for the past 2 years but that was diagnosed as depression instead.

I am not really responsive to antidepressants and suffer with the side effects of going on and coming off them, and a light box purchased last November has helped with my SAD symptoms but only to a degree.

My question is that living here in the UK I have started to feel a lot better during April and May when the sun has come out and it has been warm and bright but as soon as a cloudy or rainy day returns then I feel terrible again and all the SAD symptoms of tiredness , overeating, social withdrawal etc….. return and then go away again when the sun returns.

Is this normal and do others feel the same or will I build up more of a tolerance to the cloudy/rainy days as the summer progresses i.e. July, August and September and not be as affected as I am now in late spring i.e April and May or am I at the mercy of the weather all year round?

Any help and advice would be appreciated and by the way I am still using the light box on these cloudy/rainy days.

Hey Dean

I think using the lightbox on the cloudy days is a good idea. It's the only way really, if it is indeed the cloudy days that are making you feel like crap.

If using the lightbox isn't working on those days, then you might have to look into supplementing some of the vitamins that the sun gives, which work in a different way to that of the lightbox, e.g vitamin D.

Then I suppose if that doesn't work, then you need to look deeper into it or move to a sunny country.

When I say look deeper into it I mean contact your GP and get a counselor, as you may have underlying issues that are making you so sensitive to the cloudy days. You could like me, have depression and SAD.

I think people with depression, very often have SAD because the depression can make you very sensitive, although most people with depression don't know about SAD and some people with depression might not know they have depression!

You might also look at your diet; Too much sugar, caffeine, alcohol and all the bad things can make you more sensitive. Alcohol (as you probably know) is a depressant, caffeine is an accelerant and sugar increases your blood pressure, not just in the long term, but also if taken in large quantities will increase blood pressure quickly, then you have to deal with the after effects; Tiredness etc etc..

I'm in a similar situation myself, but SAD has taken a bit of a back seat till I get other parts of my life sorted.

HI

I too suffer on the cloudy/rainy days. I find myself feeling depressed and not in the mood to do anything.
On the nice sunny days I am up and busy, norm doing my veg in the garden.
I did start to think it was just me, and may be I am suffering depression and not SAD.
I did start to feel better once the days got better but noticed I went back down hill in April.
I must admit I do drink alot of coffee. Even though I have 1 sugar I do get through a lot of cups in a day, I will make the effert to cut down to see if I start feel better, maybe I may even get to bed before 1 am.
I am thinking of growing veg over the winter. may be this will help me, I love growing my own veg and watching them grow, I can spend all day on a sunny day doing it.
