I was listening to a programme on the radio in my car (part of a programme because I had to go into work) about blood.

Whilst I suspect that 'blood group diets' are a pile of hooey the scientist was saying that blood groups tend to have certain traits so out of curiosity I wondered if SAD folk were grouped in one blood group or are we a wild and varied bunch.

This isn't science. It's doesn't even masquerade as science just Bright One curiosity. So no one has to actually identify themself I've set it up as a poll:
so if you're SAD (and you know it clap your hands!), dr or self diagnosed then click your blood type. I just want to know... I'm intrigued.

Hmmm....... that's a problem isn't it. Do medical records have our blood group on, I think perhaps not. I only know mine 'cos I'm a blood donor. Makes this poll a little tricky, and I was really interested to know the outcome. How else can one discover one's blood group?

b. get you out of the house
c. have a drink and a biscuit
d. feel good about yourself and get letters that tell you that you are amazing and wonderful
e. get excited when you get send a new card because you've hit a new milestone in numbers of donations
f. have a lie down
g. have your blood pressure taken
h. have your iron levels taken
i. have a biscuit
j. have another biscuit (there are 3 in a packet)
k. lie on the settee drinking tea (because they say you should rest afterwards)
l. feel guilt free about the biscuits
m. feel a sense of quiet pride, somewhere, somehow you are saving lives
n. if your me try desperately to stay ahead of your partner in number of donations (because I know that when I get pregnant I'll have to miss out on some... me? competitive? no... well, maybe a little bit!

Well done! :D

Trust you Amy, you are certainly a kid with drive you know! Couldn't have said it better myself!

Hubby and I are both blood donors, but currently 'on hold' owing to the fact that I have had Malaria (grew up in Kenya) and hubby spent his formative years in South Africa so he's a Malaria suspect! So our race against each other is temporarily suspended, and at present I am way ahead of him!!

It really is true, giving blood is the quickest way to:
* do another person a real favour
* boost your self-esteem
* find out your blood group

....... and then fill in Amy's Poll!!

Go for it! Julie

Hi all,
I found out from a nurse that you cannot find out your blood group unless like others are donors or just ask for a blood test!!

I have been thinking to be a donor for a while (especially as I am in nursing!!!), but I have a fear of being refused for a simple reason and then I gonna think that I've got a really bad virus!!!
I know it sounds mad but I have had this fear for a number of years.
I recently found out a collegue felt the same!!!

I'm sure that if I had a virus I would have known by now. I have been with my partner for 8 years!!! I know it sounds stupid! :? :? :? :? :?

Well the weather is rain this morning so I think I am going to stay in!!!

Bye for now all

Hi Donna ~

Don't panic! The Bloodwagon Band are a great bunch of people, sensitive, kind and understanding.

There is a quantity of literature to read and a declaration to sign each time you donate, it's very informative and clear. Simply answer honestly and to the best of your knowledge. At that point you can consider if you feel you wish to donate, or simply move on. A prick of a finger and you discover if you are anaemic, and then if they consider all your other ticked boxes are ok, off you go to donate. All blood is now screened by way of routine, and if there was something the matter, of which you are currently completely unaware, they would inform you and you could then start to get it sorted out. I am convinced in addition to everything else, that giving blood is of physical benefit to the donor too.

I understand anyone however who is too anxious to donate, I was dragged along by a 'friend' and I was most reluctant. I have talked about donating with my friends, not one has gone along though. After all, needles when you don't have to......!!?* But, get through that small hurdle and, you're a Blood Donor!!

"It's a thought.."

Sky blue thoughts to all of you. Julie

Thank you for your very kind and encouraging words Julie. :D :D :D :D
I know underneath that I have nothing to worry about, it's something I worried about when AIDS was first heard of in the eighties and after a couple of boyfriends it kinda stuck in my mind!!! :? :? :? :? :? :? :?
It's psychological and I know that I don't have it but a teenage worry that stuck!!
I pass my blood donor place every morning on the way to work so I should just get on with it!!! That's what I would say to anyone else!!!

Thanks again and hi to all

go for it Donna,

I first went blood doning at the first session after my 17th birthday (I think you have to wait until you're 18 now). Since then my husband has started going (took a little persuasion at first but now he is extremely proud to be a donor).

I always think that it's wonderful that I am screened 3 times a year for various illnesses. I have a basic health assessment, including checks for anaemia and blood pressure...

by the way if you are ever refused because your iron levels are low, please remember that they set the minimum very high for blood donation so although you may not be able to donate it doesn't necessarily mean that you are anaemic BUT it is a very useful warning that you are perhaps a bit run down and should take care of yourself.

My mum couldn't give a couple of times because her iron levels were low and I had to give her big hugs and guinness because she took it very personally! bless.

Seriously, everyone should consider being a donor. you never know when you might need help.

And don't be afraid of the needles. Imagine the pain some people endure daily. It's a pin prick in the stab wound of life! (Yuk. sorry about that)

I guess I'm a bit evangelical (about blood doning) because on sunday evening I was stuck for 2 hours on the M6 about 6 cars behind an horrific accident. 15 police vehicles, 5 fire and rescue service vehicles, 3 ambulances and an air ambulance. Someone needed blood and I am willing to give.

Hear endeth the lesson.

sorry about that.

Thank you for your support Amy,
Im so glad you were not involved in that accident. It sounds that you were close.

No probs, needles don't bother me, especially as I am in nursing and try to help patients who are needle phobic!! (usually men built like Rugby players! Boy when they fall they fall hard!!!) :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

I will go to see my blood donor soon though, especially as its on my hospital site at work!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Love to all

You can also find out your blood group from your pregnancy hospital record card, so I assume if you've had children it would be on your records at your GP's.

How do I add my "vote" to the poll? Nothing seems to happen when I click on it. :?:

You've reminded me to give blood which I haven't done for years. This is the correct link to find out about sessions - http://www.blood.co.uk/pages/search.asp

I found it quite reassuring knowing that I was tested for various nasties - once I was a bit on the borderline for iron but the only time I got turned away was due to middle east travel.

I don't remember voting in this poll but it's displaying as if I had, so I can't vote anyway!
