Hello, has anyone read the book the Mood Cure. It has a very interesting section on the effects of a lack of seritonin can have and talks about SAD too. To counter the lack of seritonin the book recommends 5-HTP which is a precurser for the production of seritonin in the brain.

I was wondering if anyone has tried 5-HTP to see if that helps their SAD symptoms.

Hi Diane

I haven't read that book, but I have read many others on using diet and supplements to control mood. Personally, 5-HTP didn't help my SAD, but I didn't get any ill effects from it either. Other people in the forum have tried it too - search for '5HTP' or '5-HTP' to find some of their experiences.

Hi Diane,

I had tried 5 HTP after reading about it when doing some research on nutrition. After extensive research it didn't appear that it could do me any harm and so I gave it a try and I personally found that it helped to ease my carbohydrate cravings which to led to the inevitable excessive weightgain each winter, and I felt more in control. I buy mine from Holland and Barratt health store and found that I needed to increase my dose from theor recommended 1 capsule a day (I did this after more extensive reading up on it from various sources). It did give me some weird dreams for a few nights when I started taking it - but that has stopped and I avoid taking them before bedtime. I have a had periods where I have stopped taking them - for instance when I ran out and couldn't get to buy some more for 2 weeks and I did notice a difference. Again from my research I only take them for 3 months a time before taking amonth off - but to be honest I no can't remeber why this is - I just have a note tomyself that this is recommended ! ?
I have recently taken delivery of my Light visor and combined with again much research on nutrition and diet with a whole load of determination I am feeling quite good at the moment which is a vast improvemnt on last year when I nearly didn't make it through.
Good luck
Kerry
