We're back to September after the worst summer I can remember and the SAD is definitely closing in on me. My mood has deteriorated and the energy and concentration levels are very low. My motivation is also non existent. If I'm feeling like this now, Lord knows what it's going to be like in my traditionally bad months of February and March.

Worst thing is, I'm starting a new job in 2 weeks and I'm not sure I've got the strength to go through with it. I'll have to of course, mortgages and bills need paying.

But, I am thinking there is maybe a way out ? Today, I've been searching the internet for jobs in the Canaries and I feel as though I'm almost on the verge of leaving everything I've ever worked for in order to escape the next 6 months. Nothing seems to matter to me any more, family, possessions, money, health.

I feel like just booking a one way flight and never coming back.....

Sounds a bit drastic, but isn't there a way you try this out maybe just for this year and see how you get on. If you decide it's worth it then you could make a permanent move there. How's your Spanish?

Sadly these decisions are best made when one is at one's best and this is possibly not the time!

As a reality though, if your family situation allows you to go and work somewhere sunny during the "dark" months then I'd say "go for it". Even with light therapy winter is still a chore for many of us and the only real way to avoid it is to get someone that there is still decent light over the winter.

All the time! I always imagine myself booking a flight, packing a bag & just leaving without telling anyone or dealing with any of the consequences of abandoning my life. Then I realise it's impossible to escape consequences & know that just leaving is not the right way forward at all so I stay put as I know that deep down I dont want to lose all my friends/family etc!

Good luck with the new job

hi Shaunnie,
may be not the best time of year to make life changing decisions!
Every November for the last 5 years i have done the following:
1.told my husband i want a divorce
2.phoned an estate agent to sell my house
3. written my resignation for my full time job
4. looked into buying a canal boat for me and the kids
During November and December i am convinced that all of the above will make me happy.Luckily all of the above takes some time to do and then it is Christmas, and then i start to loose momentum, and then the nights get lighter and then...........
All is well in the world!
I laugh about this during the summer but spend hours crying about it in the winter.
does anybody else go through annual rituals like this?

I can fully understand.

Mine is between Jan and Feb and I go through the same ritual.

I want a divorce or want to be on my own
I change my job
I have actually done both..........

But have learnt my lesson and luckily can't get rid of this partner as easily. Not that I really want to, but I am giving him a hard time already. He must dread coming home from work!
Changed my job early this year and after only 2 weeks regretted it so luckily could go back to my old job. Have already changed my job again though, start new one on Monday. Hope it's the right decision.

How many other illness' do you know of that are that destructive? Why do we feel like this? What greater power controls us that we can be so focused on destroying our lives.

Sorry about that rant yesterday. I just felt so low. It is good to know that others feel like making irrational or life changing decisions when the winter starts to bite.
Jen, your post is how I feel now - I know it's impossible to escape the consequences so I will have to deal with it for now....

Hi all

Its nice to see that there are loads of people out there that know exactly how i feel. I have just handed in my notice in work (I only worked 1.5 days aweek) and have spent today as every day since I can remember in my bed. My mood hasn't really lifted at all this year but is definately on the way down big style at the moment. All my husband keeps saying is 'think positive Ali' 'you just have to decide that things are going to be better and they will be' and the most helpful of all (not!!!), 'pull yourself together Ali, just get up and do things'. These are the times when I feel like running and hiding, but I have no-where to run to or nowhere to hide (except my bed of course and I am getting fed up with being there too). Sorry for sounding so pessimistic, but at least you guys know what its like. Thanks for letting me have my tuppence worth. Allison

Hi Ali

Sorry to hear you are feeling like that. I have been to the docs today as I am so low at the moment but that is because I came of my tablets for the summer and have not gone back on any yet. I just don't want to do this anymore, it's too hard!!

I emailed my friend Purplecrab this morning at some ridiculous hour because I was beside myself and like you feel as though I have nowhere to go. She phoned me straight back and that meant so much to me to know she was there and just understands how I feel. She's such a lovely friend to have.

We are here for you too. We all feel the same so don't apologise, I hope it helps to know that we all care.

Whoops dont know what I did there. Shaunnie I get that feeling think we all do. I spent a lot of my time at a temple in Scotland this year and I felt so calm and centered, but everytime I came home I was so frustrated that I cryed an d got so wound up.
If you moved there would you be planning to come back? I mean temple life is so different to canary life iI know but it seemed to change everything, all my relationships changed. Maybe you have to think about who your leaving? and if you get over there will you be lonely? maybe write out a pros and cons list? Im only young and have no value of money or understand bills but I know I need certain things to make me feel secure, like my mum and my sis.
I think the main things to think about is you, your family and then your friends.

Hi Nicole

I live in Wigan, my fella's mum lives in Shevington, think that's not far from you. That's four of us now that live fairly close, maybe we could try and get a few more on board and arrange a meet somewhere, sometime. Have a meal, a couple of drinks and a nice chat.

I love my meetings with Purplecrab. I moved away from my family and friends a couple of years ago to live over here with my fella so don't have the same support network as I did. Having Purplecrab as a friend makes life over here more bearable for me.

*sniffs*........ actually, that's coz my apple cake is in the oven (those tablets seem to be working!) and smells good. It was stressful doing it, as I'm in the temporary kitchen and can't find anything. Apples came from neighbour's tree. He has been so good about the disruption and building chaos, I wanted to do something for him..... my boys never say no to pud either!

Awww, where are you OBE? I belong to another forum for another thing I have, we had a meet last year Nov, was fun. I found it difficult though as I wasn't well. the friend I was supposed to be going with lost her job and couldn't do it at the very last minute, so it was a case of either stay home and she would feel bad, or go and deal with it. I wouldn't say I found it easy, but I coped.

hi, my husband suffers from depression allyear round, but it does sem worse in winter. We're thinking of buying a lightbox, but the link to this forum was through the light therapy site,so I assume everyone has tried it? I'm just a bit concerned that everyone posting at the moment still seems to be suffering quite badly. Do the light boxes really help?

I'm not suffering badly at all. The only reason I'm off at the mo is because I'm in the first 2 weeks of new med. Doc is trying this as a precautionary measure this year in the hopes of warding off the worst of the SAD. He's always been of the opinion that it's better to prevent me getting 'down' rather than hitching me up once I'm there. Till now, he hasn't had the opportunity to try this, as I was only diagnosed a couple of years ago and didn't give him the chance to try this preventative therapy. It seems perfectly reasonable to me that I need to be using the lamp, gettting the rest etc etc and taking all precautions to prevent the sad taking hold, rather than waiting for it to happen.

I think a lot of people are holding a lot of anxiety about the forthcoming season,as it's been such a dark summer, not had the freedom that summer usually brings, psychologically speaking I don't think the poor weather has done us any favours at all. Just my opinion

Thanks purplecrab. I hope the new medication works for you - preventioin definitely better than cure! Meds used to work v well for my husband, but last few years nothing seems to touch it. We thought we might as well try a lightbox - can't do any harm, anyway.

Meds will be fine, I took this same one last year at the end of the season so am optimistic about it. Hope the lightbox works for you. Maybe your dh needs to talk to his GP about a change of med. I had a change last year as i didn't feel I was getting therapeutic effect, also too many side effects to cope with.

yes, side effects can be grim. He's changed a few times, been on venlafaxine for a year now. seemed better at first, but he's been very bad the last couple of weeks. Still, we'll give the lightbox a go, and will report here (if anything to report!) Hope you and everyone else on here has an ok winter.
