Hello everyone!

Just wondering how everyone is feeling now that christmas is approaching! Hope that everyone is well. I've gladly been feeling brilliantly this past week or so even while I have been ill aswell. Maybe it is the christmas spirit in the air or I'm just feeling better from the increase of my antidepressants. I used to take sertraline and they didn't work for me either. Now I take venlafaxine 225mg a day and they are brilliant :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hope everyone is as happy as me

:x I hate bloody Christmas trying to be jovial when I want to snap peoples heads off. Writing endless bloody Christmas cards when I don't really care about these people! Buying presents for people who haven't the intellect to choose a gift for themselves  . Maybe that's just me but I can't be doing with the fuss. Don't forget the mountains of food I really should not be anywhere near it's hard enough eating properly as it is!

I too hate christmas I'm afraid!!! I think it is all alot of fuss about nothing and I refuse to spend too much!!!

I have already told everyone that they will not be recieving a xmas card from me this year beause I see them most days!!!

I'm sorry to sound like scrouge (think it's spelt correct???), but I don't like the idea of people thinking it's better to get into debt so that they can get great presents for others!

Anyway, I like to be different just to kick up a debate with my pals at work ( good healthy debate!!)

i don't celebrate it at all.
i do like taking the dog out at night and seeing all the pretty lights thou :)

Hi Sebrown

DWP=Department of Works and Pension, formally known as DHSS.

or as I refere to them The Department of WAR and Pensions

They (well in my area) are the most ignorant people in refrence to dealing with SAD people. In fact i would say they verge of discrimiation. (no offence intended to the many excelent people who work there)

After been informed of my SAD in writing from my Doctor they use wording in some clerical reports like "The claimant claims to suffer from the SAD syndrom"

If they don't consider a medical report we don't stand a cat in hells chance of having SAD acepted as disabaling as it can be.

Hi sebrown

The disabiled Living allowence is payable if you have a sickness for at least 3 months and expect it to last another 6 months.

As most other things depend on your circumstances I have some good advice web sites that can give you a idea what you should be able to claim for.

Let me knoe if you want them

Strictly speaking I don't celebrate 'Christmas' but I am very into the winter festival. My dissertation was about how Christian festivals and traditional Pagan (pagan used with it's original 'rural' meaning) celebrations are interestingly similar.

One scholar wrote that the church knew that Jesus had been born on the 25th but didn't know what month! (not many lambs are born in December) The traditional festivals of solstice, sun god reborn etc were too important to the 'simple' people so the church merged the Christmas festival with them and allowed the feasting and partying to continue!

I love being with my family and I love laughing and eating and being with them and for me it is a marker, the days will start to get longer from then on so it is an important time with me because I know things will get easier... I've made it this far so I can do it.

Also it gives me an excuse to play with glitter and holographic paper because I make all my own cards. Snowflakes and fir trees this year and I might do some holly ones.

Anyway 'Seasons Greetings' to you all.

I will be celebrating the solstice, as the very start of the daylight hours gradually increasing once more. I don't do very much of the commercial 'xmas' stuff (and I don't see 'xmas' as pagan, or christian, it's just about lots of stuff being sold to us from October onwards) because all the shopping and rushing around stresses me out too much. I don't do decorations, because I don't get much enjoyment out of them, save for fairy lights. My family decided years ago not to give presents apart from the kids, which leaves me just one nephew to buy for. I'll get one present for hubby and he'll get one for me - that's it! I may go over to my parents, if not we'll get in games to play so we don't have to watch the same films that are on every year, order some nice food online and go for a walk in the woods if the weather's OK. It sounds a bit 'bah humbug' I know, but we've gradually worked out what we need and we don't need from that time.

Lovely picture oldhippy! I wish we could go away on holiday, unfortunately my husband just started a new job a couple of weeks ago so has no holiday entitlement yet. I hope we can get away in January/February.

Season's Things to all of you!

You've all said it! I hate the hype and pressure, I freeze when I read "your fool proof 10 day countdown to Christmas Day", I detest the commercialism and waste, even greed... I don't like cards they are so irritating, so this year am emailing those with email...that saves a few trees...

But on the upside I adore tiny weenie fairy lights lighting up dark little corners of home; my huge sweet jar glowing coloured little lights just sat there on a bookshelf; the promise of lengthening days; the stillness and silence of Christmas Day; the excuse to eat what on any other day I would try to avoid; and all of us being lazy together watching something on tv in the afternoon always ending in most of us being asleep. Oh, and especially mince pies! You can keep the rest of it though.

Thank you oldhippy for the lifting greeting, I liked that too!

Am I the only person who like Christmas anymore?? Its the only thing that keeps me going thru November and December, getting to put up my xmas lights and my tree, and getting together with my family on Christmas Day. Its my favourite day of the year.

Don't let the commercial crap get you down.......sit and watch Santa Claus the movie, in the light of your christmas tree, and I guarantee it'll cheer you up!!

Either that or you're so sick of the damned movie being shown every Christmas that you'll chuck the TV out of the window and vent all your frustrations.....

Forgive me for being young and naive that Christmas is about family and friends and not buying children mobile phones / DVD players and PS2's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me x

Hi Kiki

True, it's not Christmas per se, it is the commercial jazzing-up and the subliminal messages in all the ludicrous advertising instilling the 'lemming syndrome' in the unaware. If one is lucky, it is a family time, a happy, reflective, appreciative time, and a time of aspiration. But it needs to be gentle and calm, with an awareness that not everyone everywhere is having a jolly good time.

Like I said before I like spending time with family at Christmas. But I suppose I'm lucky because it's quite laid back for me.
We live 11 miles from my parents and 1 mile from the mr's parents (I'd prefer it the other way round). So we have Christmas dinner at my ma and pa's on Chrimbly Eve (family tradition started many many years ago) stay over night and have breakfast and present opening. Around 11am we head to our own house where I start cooking vegetables and we unwrap presents from each other. Then once the veg is cooked we pack it all into a cool box which has been warmed for this purpose and take it to the hubby's mum and dads where we sit down and eat again. It's all fairly laid back and easy going and not even slightly stressful... well a little bit!

So that's my Christmas. Quite nice really.

There we go, I knew there were some of you 'closet christmassy' people out there. I have to say that the majority of our office have sent an email rather than cards and donated money to our charity for the year (for a thermal camera for the local fire station) which to be honest I think is a far better idea.

Less than 2 weeks to go, and I'm just looking forward to giving people their presents that I've really thought about this year (I even made my own xmas crackers - lol)

Reading back thru the posts, I must take slight offence.....I know that a LOT of people have problems with us 'benefit staff' (whether DWP or LA)but believe me there are those of us who work there who aren't so bad...... I'm a benefits officer, and I suffer this just as the rest of you (maybe not so bad - but enought at times) and they are not particularly understanding to staff either!!!!!!! Don't give up on all of us, you never know, you may get me at the end of the phone one day

One of the girls at my office had a top idea. Rather than everyone sending everyone cards in the office, we set up a collection box money for a local charity and a whitebord in the dinning room for messages. Takes all the stress out of it and only one message to write.

Hi there "oldguesswho" !!

Nice to read you, thought we might not see much of you whilst you are away having a great time 1000's of miles away with your mates! Good to see you have managed to log in and check us all out ~ nothing changes here, well not until April next year, except that more SAD folk are finding the Forum which is good.

What's the weather like where you are? Got sun? Hope so!

Why and how does it wiggle? I mean the symbol next to the title of the post.

And are the stickies stuck to the top of the page?
Am I the only one who wishes they'd drop down like ordinary posts now that I've done reading them?

Can anyone explain the madness of my life?

Yes, aren't those STICKY posts oh so tedious, perhaps they should eventually time expire as part of their programming!

And could anyone explain why, when I have checked the "log me in automatically" box on the log in page, it never does? Is there something else I should have done? And, despite all oldhippy's assistance, I am still unable to insert an image in my posts. I hate things I should be able to do and can't...

The sky is blue, should be feeling uplifted, but just feel as though my brain cells have fused together and everything has become immovable.

Groan, Julie
Hope you lot enjoy your blue sunny day though!
