Hi guys, I'm finding it quite difficult to distinguish depression from SAD. Obviously there's the winter thing but is it coinsidence that I feel so crap now ?? From what I can gather SAD sufferers oversleep and take naps...but I can't get to sleep and wake early (more like depression I reckon).
The best cure for this SAD 'type' syndrome seems to be the light therapy so might give it a go. The nearest thing I've tried is a trip to Australia shortly after christmas which seemed to instantly remove the symptoms!
Hi Rob ~ it's quite a conundrum this SAD thing.....
Firstly, severe SAD is a form of major depression plus.
For me, a severe SAD sufferer, light therapy eliminates the depression (extremely debilitating) and the constant napping. Actual SAD napping just produces a greater desire to nap more, with no refreshment, if you see what I mean.
1 I am then left with the 'plus' bits: 2 poor sequencing (or muddled thoughts) 3 Low driving force 4 small bursts of energy to get things done, resulting in "not a lot" owing to 2 above! Carbo craving almost to an extreme Weight gain (10lbs so far this winter) Low self esteem Antisocial tendancies
Well, I was trying, but hit the wrong key ! (see above, sequencing!)...
As I was saying:
5 Carbo craving almost to an extreme 6 Weight gain (10lbs so far this winter) 7 Low self esteem 8 Antisocial tendencies
But, sleep disturbance is also a major part of SAD. Some folk are out for the count every night, others have problems like yours, and then there's the napping problem..
However, generally (as in the majority, but not all) SAD sufferers are those who feel depressed and gain weight, compared to other depressives who have a tendency to lose weight.
Whichever you have, or for many its both, it's indescribable hell. Depression, in which ever guise it comes, is a utter curse, being invisible and not understood by anyone who does not have the T shirt.
However, there is hope. Try one thing at a time. If you use light therapy, if it is going to work it will within 10 days. It does work for 85% of SAD sufferers. However, some people need the addition of medication.
Whatever, you are in the right place ~ all manner of encouragement and understanding is here. Keep posting, asking, and telling us how you are getting on.....
All good wishes, Julie, oh .... and welcome to the SAD Gang
