I was reading the other thread and read that lightboxes are comming out again. Much earler then we would normaly expect (September)

To me I can aways tell the very first sign of SAD rearing its head again is when I get a sudden urge to prepare for hibernation, plus the morning ache....

Plus a constant looking outside and thinking winter is a comming....

I got my lightbox out (I don't think of it as Mr Lightbox, maybe my one is androgynous?) But I haven't used it consistently, just for a couple of times when we were having that really grey few weeks. Here the light levels have been variable - either bright sunburn weather or grey and humid. Which is not good because I am really grumpy in humid weather! Also I have a small and over-insulated house which is stifling in summer, so that means my sleep gets disturbed. Still I've been getting just about enough light more recently and feel better than I did last month. This year I am going to get into a routine early though, late Aug or early Sept, I have left it t too late in previous years.

Hi Lorraine

Yes I got my light box out to check it all out in case when I need it the thing actually works. I have a little sticker on the side of it telling me to change bulb next year,

Plus I re-strart taking my vits and brighting the place up. I've been painting walls and woodwork nice bright colours, In consideration they where white walls and white woodwork it was sorta depressing looking at them so now they are burgandy and blues and greens. This year I moved my desk near window and is really nice to look out on the trees :-)

Daniel's just had to go home because he had a shotting pain in his head whilst he was having a driving lesson this morning and the monitor at work was making his head worse. I think this is a sign that he's getting the sad symptoms again, but he said not. I don't think he's made many full weeks this year at work. Ordering a light box tomorrow. Its Daniels birthday tomorrow and in previous years he's not been well, he never looks forward to his birthday, nearly always have a funny bout.

Hi Carole

Do'es Daniel suffer from migraines, I know when I was learning to drive the added stress been at the wheel was a nightmare and only passed after 3 attempts. You mention the VDU has he had Any vision distortion? if so might be migraines as I get them but no pain just the colored wavy lines, quite trippy really.

During the SAD time i now do meditation to relieve the depression with sad, seems to help me a bit. Might not for others.

Stress can cause a multitude of illnesses..

Apart from a good multi vitamin with iron, a few flax seed oil and a few garlic, plus during the "season" I tend to eat more fruit and green stuff instead of binging out on pasta and carbs.

And St Johns wort instead of prozac which seems to be the normal prescribed medication, But reading the news we are all proberly getting prozac in out drinking water...

Feeling off colour, thought it was just bog standard depression.

Maybe its not, I was sure I had come to the conclusion I had SAD.

Feeling grotty during the summer made me think that maybe not.

After reading all the posts it has made me feel better knowing that others are the same.

Hoping for better sunshine today.

No my son's been suffering during the summer too. He's trying a light box for the first time today, fingers crossed.

Can you still wear your glasses when you are using your light box?

Glasses are fine, as long as they're not tinted!
The important thing is that the light gets into your eyes. There's no need to stare at the box just make sure that the light is positioned so it can enter the eye.

A tip is to make sure that your glasses are clean, the main reason I say that is it is really really irritating if they're dirty because the light shows up all the fluff, grease spots and smears.

On the subject of glasses, I had laser eye surgery in June this year. I was high as a kite for weeks afterwards . . . I'm sure it was because I was getting more natural light. The dull grey weather has put paid to that now, though and I'm back to the same old same old. I've started using my lightbox again the past couple of weeks - not every day but I've been feeling quite flat sometimes.

I've got the lightbox out properly now, started using it over the last few days. I looked at Norman Rosenthal's 'The Winter Blues' and he's suggesting most people would want to start lightbox in October, not here with this summer we've been having! I wear glasses. They have an anti-scratch/anti reflection coating but don't appear tinted as such. Sometimes I'll take off my glasses while using the lightbox but I don't notice much of a difference when I do.

Yes I was reading that the UK has been experencing the worse month for wet dull weather. Perhaps the sad is geeting the signal to get hibernating in early for a dull winter.

I notmally wear the specs but good for me in the mornings i don't during light box time. Normally if I don't forget wear computer specs that cut down on the clare of the screen..

Hiya Gang!

Yep, me too, have been having lightbox 'top-ups' for the last 3/4 weeks on especially gloomy days, of which there have been rather too many! I wake up every morning with the feeling that IT is on the way to grab me and drag me under ... there's already a tinge in the leaves and a different smell in the air. Years and years of those tiny little things giving me a sense of foreboding still cannot be shaken off, despite being virtually given my winters back by using the good old satellite lightbox. To be honest I am still frightened, anxious that this year maybe light simply won't be man enough for the job. "SAD", the very word makes me feel sick.

But, we will be ok, won't we? My head isn't messed up (yet), but mornings are challenging. My Lumie is still one of my best friends, only trouble is it will have you believe that it's a lovely sunny day out there, every single morning!

Kindest things you lot, hang on in there, and, "be prepared" Julie

Lo Peeps,

Not I have not started my light box yet, but thinking on it.

What a miserable summer it’s been lately. Wow, there has been nothing but rain for the last month! Last year I started feeling SAD in October, not August!

Last winter, I was so tired of SAD I considered going to the Dr for something stronger than St Johns. Instead, I hit the gym in anger, which helped me a lot. In fact, it amazed me, as I did not use my light box or St Johns. I soon took to jogging, as I do not like either the expense of a gym, or the atmosphere.

I am just wondering if I should start St Johns this year, as I am still running 3 times a week but feel quite low already. I find it hard to use the light box, as it is easy to stop after a couple of weeks, when you often feel much better. St Johns is easier for me to take as I just take one each morning with breakfast.

Cheers,

Karl

Hi ... I really shouldn't have mentioned my head not being messed up yet in my last post. All's gone pear shaped now, I have this week become a dysfunctional lethargic, my only motivation to move is to eat, and junk at that. Does anyone else find that SAD literally arrives overnight?

Julie :(

Yup! I totally understand the eating part, I think that because of the bad weather recently our bodies are starting to go into hibernating mode, despite the fact that there is sun around at the moment.

Im suddenly craving anything sweet - it's not helping the diet! I'm also snapping a lot, every time I go to bed I feel that I've annoyed everyone and no one likes me! But if I think things through logically afterwards, I normally agree with their side of the argument!!
