I would be interested to know how many people on this forum have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism as well as SAD. I've not been clinically diagnosed with SAD (just know I have it), but wonder just how much of my problem is SAD and how much of it is hypothyroidism. The symptoms are extremely similar. I medicate for my hypothyroidism but wonder sometimes if my meds are as effective as they could be.
When I approached my doctor a few winters ago with depression. He agreed that I was possibly suffering from SAD, but wanted to rule out any organic causes! After a blood test I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, which he told me could also be contributing to my mood. Now on regulated medication for my thyroid all is great...except in the 'dark months'. I am still suffering badly in the winter time! Whilst hypothyroidism can cause similar symptoms to SAD, for me my thyroid is sufficiently controlled through medication, and it is only this time of year my depression attacks me! Fun, fun, fun!!
