I note with great interest that prozac appears to be a popular choice of treatment for s.a.d.
I have suffered from depression for a number of years now and have been prescribed many different antidepressants (I am currently taking reboxetine); it would seem that I maybe suffering from s.a.d, since my depression is more of a problem in the dark months, although I`ve have the odd bout during summer. Is reboxetine a suitable treatment for s.a.d ? or, would I be better off with prozac ? can anyone give me their views ?

Namaste Martin,

Like your good self I too endure depressive bouts, and have done for many years. To complicate matter further I had an accident resulting in a head injury two years ago.

I have noticed definite negative mood changes etc during the autumn/winter months, but for the last 18 months I have been on a course of Fluoxitin (Prozac) - SSRI, Unfortunately I have not noticed any substantial change during winter time.

I've decide to attack the whole problem S.A.D, Depression and Head Injury with a multi literal approach - Hypnotherapy & psychotherapy, Light therapy (Including a natural alarm clock light), Regular exercise (Swimming and Kung Fu), Yoga (Helps with relaxation and attacks Immune deficiency problems and reclaims lost energy); Natural Vitamin Supplements, and Drug therapy (I'll be changing from Fluoxitin to another SSRI such as ciprinol which I tried a few years ago and found it to be more effective) but if in doubt consult your doctor. Incidentally I've also found Organic unprocessed foods positively influence moods, energy and concentration levels.

I whole heartedly believe their is no one way to approach S.A.D and Depressive illnesses. Trusting your experience and intuition are a good guild. Finding an understanding doctor only improves matters (not always possible unfortunately as I have learned from bitter experience).

Many doctors from the old school place far to much trust in absolutes such as drugs because they are generally predictable and manageable, this in my humble opinion is a somewhat linear perspective.

I hope you and all find my personal experiences as mentioned above helpful.

Peace,

Glenn

I am a second year university student at the University of Glasgow and found your address listed under a useful website recommended to me. I was wondering if you could help me on an assignment I have been presented with. It is believed an 18 year old male university student is suffering from SAD and I have to propose tests to find if his disorder is due to lack of light, cold weather or his exams he is sitting at the end of January. I have found plenty of information on testing light but the weather is proving a problem and I wondered whether you had any information on testing this. I have also to come up with a theraputic treatment for him and explain whether the therapy only worked due to a placebo effect. I considered discussing Prozac here but was curious to know if you had any other suggestions. A speedy response would be very much appreciated as my assignment is due in on the 11th of January.

Yours

Vanessa Smith

Martin,

I used Prozac one particulary bad year. It took around 4 weeks for full effect but really did make a differerence. I have had one other anti-depressent some years ago. I think it was Dothiapen. That really did not help me.

So from my limited experience of drug therapy, I would say, it rather depends on the individual.

I now use St Johns Wort, and it really is good for me. I had to experiment a bit, and tried a number of suppliers, but have now settled on ASDAs own. Some of the others irritated my stomach for some reason.

I'm no expert, but would say if you feel REb is not working well for you, talk to your Dr and ask to try Prozac, or St Johns.

I understand St Johns is now the most commonly prescribed anti-depressent in Germany. But its still considered a herbal remedy in the UK.

Hope that helps, and do take care.

Karl

I know the original message is quite old, but this is the first time I have visited the site.

I think it is very important NOT to take St Johns Wort with any other anti - depressant at the same time. It can affect the active ingredients and can cause potentially serious side effects. You must see your GP before starting \ finishing treatment.

I have suffered from SAD for several years and have found that Prozac does help with the deppresive symptoms of the illness but the side effects, for me, are nervousness and sweating.
