I have never been diagnosed with SAD, but ever since I moved from the sunny, warm desert of Arizona back to cold, cloudy Pennsylvania I get depressed a lot. Mostly in the winter. I have most of the symptoms of SAD, except for the eating part. I am on a seasonal layoff from work which doesn't help. I really cannot afford a light box and definately do not want to take medication for it. I am wondering if a move back to the sunny, warm desert might not be a good alternative. The problem is my wife. She has lived here all her life and does not want to move, and doesn't seem to understand what I'm going through. Any ideas?

BTW, I just noticed there is another Steve who posted about citalopram. I am not that Steve. Wish I would have noticed it sooner, I would have used a different screen name. Sorry.

Werll the reply isn't gonna be as controversial as the title. Why not go for a diagnosis with a doctor. Encourage your partner to read books/information to make her own informed choice and a doctor might back up your own belief or support you through a period of depression. Are you in touch with NOSAD or SADA ? Maybe she thinks it's reactive due to job situation. If you have SAD explain it is usually a life long illness and that in the long term it would benefit her! I wish England had some sunny regions to move too!

Hi Steve ~ well, a light box is far cheaper than a relocation back to the desert of Arizona, and your wife would not have to consider moving either! It would also be a good idea to have your wife read The Winter Blues by Norman Rosenthal, available I am sure from your local library, it is the most informative book on SAD from diagnosis to cure. Research Light Boxes in the USA, here we have OutsideIn who supply light boxes on a 21 day money back guarantee if it does not work, I am sure you will find similar in the States, somewhere. All the very best, Julie
