I appreciate that we all visit this site as we either know, or wonder if, we are affected by the sun, or at least the lack of its light. Like many many others I dread autumn when the whole cycle starts over again and we all struggle through until April.

However, for years I have known that I have an additional problem, and I am wondering if there is anyone else out there who is in the same fix. When the moon is full, and in the 3 days building up to this, I have much more emphasised dreams and invariably in amongst all of that I have graphic nightmares of the wide-screen, Technicolor, surround-sound type, they are most disturbing and the aftermath lingers with me for a number of days, that type of edgy, not relaxed feeling, quite exhausting in fact. Luckily hubby is usually woken by my sound effects, and in turn wakes me in an effort to nip another one in the bud! This last full moon was the worst for many months.

Any more ‘lunatics’ out there!? And, do you have any remedies? Julie

I too have notice mood changes in me when there is a full moon, I always feel more lively for some reason, but I refuse to beleve there is any connection to my moods and the moon purly becuase of my scientific nature but I wouldn't completly rule it out and there has been reports of staff at mental homes seeing change of behavior in there mental patients during full moons.

Hi Julie and Pete

Interesting!

Looking at it consider that the moon is only reflecting the sunlight and at night any increase in light might have a effect. you know what i mean. In the summer we get up great, winter its a grind!

Could be this reflection of light no matter how little has a effect.

Where do you think the word 'lunatic' comes from?

It comes from luna(r) meaning the moon.

A lunatic asylum was a place for those people who were acted crazy because of the moon... allegedly!

It has been suggested that the moon affects tides and because we are largely water we too are affected by the pull of the moon. We used to measure our years according to a lunar calendar and then some bright sparks fiddled around with the calendars so instead of thirteen 28 day months dictated by sightings of the moon we have 12 random 28, 29, 30 or 31 day months... joy!

Thanks Pete, oldhippy and Amy.

As I said, I know that I am a lunatic, in the proper sense of the word! So I guess there must equally be a name for those influenced by the sun......? The sun and moon play huge parts in my life ~ I would really love a consultation with Dr Norman Rosenthal as I have so many theories on the subject of SAD, and also have so many tiny add-ons to the standard description of SAD, all of which relate to the sun/equator/the effects of where on the planet one spends one's formative years......etc. Maybe one day I will find out more......... Again you lot, thanks. Julie
