I'm about to start 7 nights of night duty....I hate nights at the best of times, but SAD times are worse.
I wonder if anyone can suggest a way for me to adjust my lamp times?

I start at 9 pm and finish at 8 am....

Hello

difficult one this one particularly as your shifts are so long. I suppose I would try light at the end of your shift as close to 8am as possible or at work around 6-7am if possible so that you are stlll getting your 'morning' dose. I would suggest staying up until 1pm then trying to sleep until 8pm.

I think whatever you do night shifts make you feel like crap! I suppose I would do this to maintain my normal lightbox pattern so that when you finish your shifts it is easier to get back to 'normal'. I have never tried it but you could see if the lightbox helps the five 'o' clock slump!

I have been instructed by my partner not to do nightshifts anymore as I am such a bad tempered arse so haven't done any recently 8)

Thanks Siddy.
It's a bit of a double whammy, I have to stay awake during the night, can't sleep well in the day. I usually get an average sleep of 3 out of 24 hours on nights and walk about like a zombie for at least a week. Untold misery on top of SAD which I have just started to feel a bit of relief from in the last week, I even managed to go to a party the other night and didn't have to fake enjoying myself!...unheard of.
I get your point about trying to keep the morning dose going and I'll do that ...usually it takes me 3-4 days after nights to get back to my usual sleeping pattern.
I can understand fully why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
