Hello everyone!

I am an architect in my final year at Nottingham University. For my graduation project i have chosen to design a centre for S.A.D sufferers.
It is a subject which i currently know very little about, but am rapidly learning how complex and serious it really is.
I have read through some of your chats and (although this felt pretty nosey!) have found them extremely interesting and helpful.
I just wanted to say hi really. I'm hoping you won't mind me listening in, in an attempt to glean some understanding of what it is really like to suffer from s.a.d.
Thanks,
Good night- Tom

Well we want comfy chairs, Harmon Kardon sound system, plasma telly and some of those medical receptionists with attitude. Plus we want jacuzzi obviously to improve our body temperature and some swedish masseurs to reduce our stress. Free coffee (minimum cafetiere) no maxwell house please or anything by nestle cos they kill babies in the third world. Oh and i suppose you might want an advanced ceiling lighting system..........................

Keeping it real........... 8)

Norman Rosenthal's book 'Winter Blues' has some information about a SAD room somewhere.

I know you're only drawing designs but if you could find some funding....

If you build it they will come!

Tom,

Are you talking about a therapy centre where people could stay for a few days? I mean a place where people can go and experience different treatments and live for a few days in an environment that is therapeutic to SAD?

or a drop in centre?
or an information centre?

I mean if you could come up with some ideas / questions I know that most of the people would be glad to offer you personal responses. They might all be contradictory! You could set up a couple of polls to get info as well and you are welcome to come to the chatroom. Tuesday 8pm. If you just let people know that you are there to extract information we're a pretty accomodating bunch (if a somewhat crazy!).

Thank you for your interest.

Are you designing this as an assignment or as something that is actully going to happen.... Because I think an SAD center would be fantastic, SAD is seriously under recognized as in terms of medical sense, when I went to my surgery and told them of my SAD they sent me to counseling sessions and thought I had problems of other sort .... But I shouldn't go on about that with you since your not a politician.... The one thing we need which is a light box and the NSH doesn't provide that for us and there not even classed as medical divices (which I can't understand) and now days you can even get sex drugs like viagra for free (if not working, student or OAP)..... The cold weather effects me more or just as bad as not having any sun light.. I've been feeling terrible these past few days with this icey weather, and when I say terrible I mean like its so hard to get out of bed and I'm constantly tied then when it does come to time for me to sleep I have insomnia... I constantly think negatively and have no energy to do anything, you try to socialize but just can't........ Its hard to even think straight.... I can understand why suicide can be on alot of people with SAD's minds because you just can't function as a normal human being.... I'm so lucky to have a family that understands and that I can work as I work for my parents I was a big mess up in school due to this disorder and didn't have the chance to do or be anything..... I can't wait till global warming starts to take effect sometimes... I mean it is inevitable anyway......

Hey guys, thanks for all your replies!
In response to your question Bright One, my project is only in the very early stages and what i design is entirley up to me. As a result i'm not entirley sure on the aims/provisions of my building, but i have a large site and all the suggestions you made should and will be catered for in some form. I want to design a building that is a place of treatment, community and refuge for sufferers. I want it to inform the public. And if possible i want to design a building whose very existence could in some way even help sufferers who were unaware of their condition. The more i learn on the subject the more i believe that this could be something that affects many of us at some level.
Unfortunately Pete this is only an assignment. However until proposals are made nothing is ever built! I'm not suggesting my work is good enough for this, but you never know what will come of it.
Obviously therapy will be at the forefront of my intentions, but i am also interested in providing an environment in which sufferers would choose to spend time, both contemplative and social. When feeling low are there any environments you particularly yearn for?
In your opinions is it important to address and treat the depression, or to focus totally on preventing it in the first place?
Do you know if there are any figures for sufferers living in the city/country. - is it thought that a closer link to natural rhythms and cycles may have an effect?
I have read some material on -ve and +ve iron theories, is this something that is being taken seriously by the S.A.D community?
I understand that S.A.D is a complex issue and that there are no set answers to these questions, but i would be very interested in any of your own opinions.
Please don't feel you have to answer these questions, but any of your thoughts would be greatly appriceated.

Thanks again for your replies

tom.

from the way you are talking about your project and the passion behind it sounds to me like it really will work after you have drawn up your ideas you should seriously approach some figure that could put it into operation as it would be such a comfort to people and a really good cause,

anyway good luck although it seems that luck is already on your side, this is a very kool idea and a nice thing to set towards. :D

You should put light boxes up all round the room. Or set up some kind of tropical summer beach simulation, make sure there's a beach bar so we can hang out and trink tequila sunrise :D
