Hi there,

I am thinking of buying this Bodyclock "Bodyclock ELITE 300"
but haven't been able to find any reviews on it yet.

If anyone has tried and tested this model please could you answer a few questions about it for me?

What are the range of natural wake up sounds like? Could you list them all for me as it doesn't give any detail on this in the description. Is the loop noticable? Are there any that are more annoying than others?

I was told that on this model the sounds run on a 60second loop/repeat which is really good and long compaired to others I have read about; but are there any wake up sounds that are noticably annoying?

If I am awake during the day but decide I would like some light thearapy could I use this as a SAD light and sit by at it for say 30minutes on its strongest sunlight/wake up point setting?

Is there an option on there? or any way to do that?

My problems with SAD are relatively mild so I don't need a strong separate light. But it would be great to have the option to get a little burst of sunshine when I feel a bit blue.

Lastly is there anything random good or bad you could tell me about this model?

Any help would be very much appreciated as it is quite pricey and a large investment for us, so I want to get it just right.

thanks :)

Hi,I got one of these at the weekend, so still relatively new to it, but I can tell you some of the things you need to know...

The natural sounds are:
Rain, Waves, Birdsong/Dawn chorus, and White Noise.
There's also two music tracks, Soft and Hard ( oo er ! ), and two spoken word tracks that basically tell you to get up. Ones assertive and ones gentle.
I didnt notice any looping, but my boyfriend did, but he didnt find it particularly annoying.

As for if any are more annoying than the others, I guess youd have to figure out which one bugs you the most! There is a beeping standard alarm setting as well, that Im pretty sure will wake me up even on my most lethargic days!

There is a way to keep the light on at its brightest, for as long as you want ( just using it as a lamp ) but im not qualifed to say if that would be any use for treating SAD. It is pretty bright though.

Overall, im happy with mine, it is a pain to tune the radio ( takes forever ), but other than that, no snags that I can see yet. You can also use presets to keep radio channels you like, and also and SD card slot, so you could use favorite tracks as wake ups.
Im impressed with mine, but I have bought it to help me more with waking up as opposed to treating SAD. Hope this helps.

"it is a pain to tune the radio ( takes forever)" oh ? Did not have that problem. Are you using the auto-tuning (keep the button pressed so it search the next station) ?

The only problem I had so far is that I "froze" the alarm-clock when trying to read the content of my SDCard... I guess it did not like my mp3.

Thanks so much for responding here, I thought my post had been missed as there was a huge debate going on in another thread. I just checked back to ask again, so thank you for that info and if anyone else has anything additional it would be most appreciated. :)

Press "S" until you see "Dawn Chorus", then press the Tuning buttons to move in the list of pre-recorded tracks.
The meditation sounds are after the various wakeup sounds.

Also thinking of buying the elite 300 but still have couple of questions.
What kind of sd card is used?
Can I swap the one that comes with it for one of my own?
About the mp3's, do they have to be a specific bitrate?
Thank you all :)!

I absolutely love my new lumie clock! I've had one of the "cheaper ones" for years now and just treated myself to the newer version.

It comes highly recommended. I love the different sounds and the meditations, and I'm guessing you can download new meditations from meditatainment to an sd card????

Either way, love it! Have been recommending them to everyone!

We are unable to access any of the wake up sounds - other than the beep - or sleep/meditation sounds. We can scroll through them and see what should be there but can't hear anything. Setting the wake audio to dawn chorus etc just gives no noise even with volume on max. The radio works ok. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

I've just bought the Elite 300, really pleased with it. However, although I've only tried it with one of the natural sounds when waking up, it always comes on on the default volume setting of 4 and not the last setting you used which it says should happen in the manual. Is this happening with everybody elses? Maybe it's a software issue or the manuals wrong? I could do with the natural sound being a little bit louder that's all.

Are you setting the sound volume then waiting until the clock clears the written instructions from the face ? If not it will revert to its default setting. Set it and wait for a minute or so until the settings disapear on their own this should solve it.

Yes, as far as I'm aware I am doing that. After I've set a new volume, I leave it to clear, if I then select the radio for example, it comes on at the volume I last set. But in the morning when the audio comes on, it's always at the default setting of 4. I presume this isn't the case with yours?

Try selecting the radio first then adjust the volume ?
Mine seems to get louder as I ignore it and snuggle in lol
Try e mailing lumie they are very helpful. As I said in a previous post they replied same day with advice and it solved my problem. They all seem to have minds of there own looking at the posts

Yeah, I've tried that as well, no luck. I spoke to Lumie and the guy I spoke to said it was supposed to come on at level 4 and they were considering a software update, which doesn't make sense if yours does what it says in the manual?

The manual says the default setting is four, But it also says " Previous volume settings will be saved for next used Unless this is 0 then the default setting will be used. Try using the radio on a higher setting then switch on the alarm and try that .

yes, I've tried that, still no luck. All I need to confirm with someone is that when they use the audio feature for waking up, that the volume it comes on at is the setting they left it on last time and it doesn't come on on the default setting.

Unfortunately the instructions are wrong and the Bodyclock only defaults
to Volume level 4.

Oh oh, interesting, wonder if it's something that can be done by putting some file on a sdcard.

Hopefully they will also fix the few bugs I signaled about the mp3 handling :)

Re: wake-up volume at 4

Are you using the sleepsound option at night (where the volume fades down over time)? If you are, then the final volume will be 0 so that's why it comes on at the default volume of 4 in the morning.

As for other queries:

It doesn't come with an SD card

If you have the display light level set to 'off' at night and need to see the clock, press any button; this will take it up to low level for a few seconds and then back down to off.

Best thing is to phone the Lumie Careline if you're having trouble.

@Jellybean
While Sleep Tropical meditation is playing, do a long press on button 4.
A long press on 4 memorises the go-to -sleep sound and a long press on 1 memorises the wake-up sound.

@chesh
If you are in lamp mode (button A is down), just press lamp - to lower the light. If you are in sunrise/sunset mode (button A is up), and you do not like the brightness of the zenith of the sunrise (too bright?) then try a 40W lightbulb, or place the lamp further away from your eyes ;-) .

@cheesh
I'm not sure you can lower the light of the digital display when in lamp mode but you can make it go off if you are in sunrise mode. (This is the mode that you want to normally be in when you are not reading a book.) Press P until you see DISPLAY AUTO. (A is down so you can program the device.) Press lamp - two times to choose DISPLAY AUTO OFF. Press A to return to sunrise/sunset mode. When the lamp light goes out, the display will now go out too.

Caveat: I see that after playing with it a bit that if you have a sleep sound programmed the only way to have the display off and the lamp off is to have finished listening to the sleep sound (that would be 20 minutes later). I guess normally this would have been last night.

@jellybean
:-) I thought you were already listening to it!
Now make sure A is pressed down. To get it to play, press S (S for sound) repeatedly until you get to the built in sounds. (Starts with AM radio, then FM radio then built-in sounds, then mp3 player then external audio.) If you go past it just keep pressing it will come around again. You will see the first built in sound which is Dawn Chorus. Now press Tuning > to scroll through the choices until you see (and hear) Sleep Tropical. Now do a long press on 4 to save it to go to sleep by. Now when you press A to enter Sunset/Sunrise mode it will play. All sounds will fade out at about 22 minutes regardless of your choice of sunset length.

You are not an idiot. The documentation needs some completion. We wrote our own quick set-up / getting started guide for our customers. (Sorry it's in French.)

The sound quality of the replay system is good (you can notice by pluggin in a headset), but the loudspeakers are not as good. You have stereo sound, but since they are small, it's never going to be hi-fi quality.

@keithm
Hi, your question is kind of confusing. First of all, is the button A up (dawn/dusk mode) or down (reading mode)? Do you mean the buttons Lamp +/- ? Or the buttons on the upper right to search the next radio station (when sound source is radio) ?

Hi, I've noticed some very annoying problems although overall I really like the clock. First, my default sound seems to be 6 not 4 as stated in the manual. And if I turn it down slightly, but also want the fade out it suddenly gets louder towards the end. I nearly jumped out of bed when it happened! So much for a relaxing end to the day.

Also the sound card doesn't play properly, only the first track, and the tracks aren't in folders or anything. The instructions that come in the manual are pretty rubbish in my opinion. It's a shame because the Elite 300 is otherwise really good.

@Hope,
Thanks for sharing the info on volume.
Sound card: We have definitely confirmed this, whether you just play a track or use a track for wake or sleep, only one track is played. This definitely annoyed some of our customers but now that we know it we've updated our product description (in our shop--not Lumie) to avoid future frustrated customers. Also we tested 4 memory cards I had handy which may be of interest.
* MMC First Champion 512MB
* SD DANE ELEC 2GB
* SD Silicon Power 133x 1GB
* SD 1GB (no name bought on eBay). Blue label. On the back there was a gold sticker marked L U and 07 - 06 underneath

Tested some tunes that according to 4Musics MP3 Bitrate Changer were 128kbps layer I and 160kbps layer I (whereas classic mp3 is layer III). I purposefully put a space and an accented character (à) in the name. They played fine--on all but the last (no-name) card which froze the Lumie. Avoid that card--stick to brand names from reputable sources. May have something to do with the supported voltage of the card.

Note that the *bad* card works fine in my old HP Photosmart camera and as a storage device with a card reader on the computer.

Thanks réveille-moi-doucement. I'll be sure to only use brand name SD cards. I emailed Lumie after I posted my last post and they sent me a PDF file which had lots of info 'Elite_SDcard_Notes_PDF_2.pdf' Why this info can't be in the manual I don't know. And it is SO annoying not to be able to play more than one track automatically. You've got to use the tuning button. To say it's got an MP3 player implies that it plays MP3s properly not just plays one track and that's it. It should be made much clearer. You can email Lumie and they'll send you the PDF.

Thanks for all the comments and feedback - even the negative stuff is useful! Some of the Elite problems only became apparent once they were out in the field which is why the instructions are a bit 'rubbish' - we will be revising them this year. Many apologies if you have been having problems - please phone the lovely folk on the Lumie Careline on 01954 780500 and they'll sort you out.

I really wish there was a fade up option on the sound alarm. As for the sound level I think you have to have the button pressed in, select the volume you want, and then wait until the volume bar disappears. Then that's set the sound. Then press the button again to switch to the alarm mode. I'd love a bit more finesse with the controls, volume, MP3, fade up alarm...

how do you set off the sunset light fade/meditation? is there an alarm clock type function for that or do you simply have to press something to start it off once you are ready to go to sleep?

Hi Christine,
Your second guess is correct. You press A (put A in up position) to start if off. But before hand you must 1) choose SLEEP SOUND AUTO with the button P and + and 2) choose a meditation to go to sleep by. You choose your sleep sound by scrolling thru the source of sounds by pressing S three times on the lower left (see DAWN CHORUS) and then scroll thru the built-in sound choices by pressing > (next) in the upper right marked TUNING, until you find the one you want. You want either SLEEP TROPICAL or SLEEP PASTORAL. Now do a long press on 4 to memorise your go-to-sleep choice. You see P4 SLEEP TROPICAL (for example). Now press A (once or twice, leaving it in a down position) to leave this mode. When you are in bed ready to listen to your meditation, bring up the light with LAMP +. Now press A (should be in up position). The meditation will finish about 21 minutes and the light fade out in about the same time (22 minutes). Note that you only have to program the clock once. Tomorrow you just press A to hear your meditation.

I have recently purchased this lamp alarm and am confused by its apparent lack of DAB radio, an aspect that I had taken for granted with the digital functions of this alarm and the high price tag.

Does it have DAB radio as an option and I just cant find it? If not I shall have to retrn it to the shop.:(

I am thinking of purchasing this alarm clock for fiancé who works shifts and finds it very hard to get to sleep (even though he's really tired) when he's on ‘earlies’, do you think this would help? He does not seem to have a problem getting up. However, I'm worried that the clock might wake me? Thanks!

Hard to say for you in particular, but in my case I manage to wakeup with just the light around 7:50 with the clock being set to ring at 8:00, and my girlfriend never wakes up until the music/ring actually starts.

Mine arrived the other day and I have to say I'm disappointed. The description states it comes with 60w daylight bulb, but mine came with a 42w bulb that doesn't appear like the daylight bulbs I've seen before that appears with clear light (hard to explain). The light is so bright and harsh, when it's on full I feel it giving me a slight headache. I was expecting the clear daylight bulb, that people sometimes use during the day when they do work. This seems like a normal everyday house hold bulb to me.

It's overpriced as as no DAB considering analogue will be switched off in 2015 the radio on this will be useless (yes I do expect the product to last that long).

Switching the displays to dim but with no alarm is quite annoying due to the feel of the buttons.

And worse offending of the whole thing, which makes this version of the Lumie overpriced and not worth the cash are the inbuilt speakers. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect hi fi quality speakers but for something that is suppose to play relaxing music and sounds, I want something that doesn't sound like a tin.

This now makes the rain storm and waves sound totally useless as they sound like they are in a tin and it sounds just plan bad. I've had to fork out another £20 on a set of external speakers to plug them into the headphone jack to make it listenable (is that even a word).

Bit annoyed.

Still disappointed. Lumie said they have in fact sent me the wrong bulb so I have to wait for that to arrive. But I don't think it's waking me up. It's just anticipation of it coming on that is waking me up. Then when I do, I feel crap because it's like someone's walked into the room and flicked the light on so it becomes annoying. I'd rather just have the sounds waking me up but there appears no way of getting it to do that, bar maybe removing the bulb.

It is however nice for going to sleep. I don't think the sunset is having any effect on me but the relaxation talk works. However, I wanted to dim the display earlier as I'd turned the alarm off. So I held - and + and the display dims but then my sleeping tune comes on. I now can't appear to dim the display without it kicking off into going to sleep mode and playing the tune.

@gi joe,
Obviously I have no idea if you have the wrong bulb but new Lumies *are* delivered with a new 42W bulb containing halogen for long life (see halogen cycle on wikipedia) and more light for less Watts to honor Grenelle (yay). I took a photo of this new 42W neodymium halogen bulb if you are curious:http://blog.lajourneeparfaite.fr/lumies-livrees-avec-neo-halogene/ With halogen gas (you see a mini bulb inside the bulb) surrounding the filament, only 42W is required to yield approximately the brightness (485 lumens) of the former 60W bulb (was 490 lumens). Brightness of a lightbulb is measured in lumens (not lux which varies with distance) 1 lux = 1 lumen/square meter.

Some of our customers say at first it is the anticipation of using their new product also that wakes them up but this newness will wear off.

Too bad about the display being bothersome; I don't have an idea to turn it off sooner. Turn the Lumie around so you can't see it?

Yes the + - trick is actually for invoking an immediate sunset (which may have a sleeping tune if set up that way). The fact that folks have found it as a way to dim the display is, shall we say, a happy design accident.

Although the Lumie 300 plays one track, you can string tracks together thus creating a playlist with software like easy mp3 joiner: http://www.google.fr/search?q=mp3+joiner.

Thanks to TedBovis for posting this solution on June 28, 2009: http://www.lumie.com/forum/2008-12-22/lumie-bodyclock-elite--mp-from-sd-card.

I've had the Lumie 300 for a couple of week now and I think it is a great product. The build quality is excellent compared with my old Philips. One thing I do miss is a LARGE SNOOZE BUTTON it makes much easier to find when you have just woken up and don't have on your glasses. So Lumie on the next model please.....

I stupidly never got round to sending mine back. So it's been boxed untouched for months. It's one big waste of money this product.

Thanks Jill. Why keep it private I could just post it here. You're customers need to know the truth. The guy on the phone at CS was sarcastic and arrogant. The lamp appears to turn itself off once on for about 3 or so hours (not sure if this is by design). Poor manual. The speakers are seriously, for the price, piss poor. The beach tune sounds like it's in a tin on them along with the white noise. I had to spend another £20 for speakers for the darn thing the inbuilt ones are so so so poor. The cost considering it's not even DAB. It's been a while since I've used it, its been boxed up, but the issues I was having was it would work, alarm wise for a few days (never worked at waking me up) but then other days the alarm just refused to go off.

Eventually I gave up. Wanted to return it but Lumie wouldn't arrange pick up. I gave up trying and its sat unused in a box for months. Bit stupid really as I was entitled to a full refund. Now I've got it out the box again. I use nothing on it bar the relaxing sounds for helping me sleep. Only works because I use external 3rd party speakers. Otherwise it's just so not worth it with the inbuilt ones.

So I've essentially paid over the odds for a piss poor lamp. The MP3 function is even a scam as it only plays one tune.

Totally disappointed and avoiding Lumie for the future.

And there ya have it. Ignored my PM, so again what's the point. Don't want to waste money on the phone call to be fobbed off. Unless I was offered a full refund, months after having the thing, then what's the point in the call?
