I've known i've had SAD for about 8 years and been seeing the doctor for the last four for it. I had to practically fail the first winter term of my degree to be taken seriously. I've tried lightboxes but they only work for me when they are on and as soon as i turn them off i fall asleep etc. My doctors response it to prescribe prozac for the Sept - March period and i've been doing that for two years. It doesn't take my SAD away completley though and i really struggle to get up in the morning when its dark. I'm now thinking about trying the body clock, but I was wondering if anybody else had tried anything that works for them?

I have found the dawn simulator alarm very helpful. I still feel tired for a lot of the winter, but I can usually get out of bed!

Last year the doc suggested that I started to take med in the autumn instead of waiting until I was desperate for it and very down. It largely worked, though I'm not the person that I am in summer. I use bright light therapy as well.

Other than that I take some minerals and vitamins and just try and look after myself as well as I can and try not to do too much.

Hi Gerty, I use the dawn simulator too, it makes such a difference. I still feel really tired in the morning but it fills the room with a lovely warm glow like sunshine and it makes it so much easier to get up. when the room isn't dark I'd really recommend it.

With utter contempt and resentment!

But that aside, I use my lightbox in the evening because i've got an advanced circadian rhythm, occasionally in the morning if i'm feeling particularly bad.
I've got a set of spot lights on a timer near my bed which combined with my alarm get me up!
Supplement wise I used high strength SJW three times a day sometimes four. Super high strength omega 3, vit B complex, multi vitamin and on an evening valarium to aid my sleep... quite the junkie me thinks ha ha!
I weight train four times a week with some cardio on these days and two specific cardio days aswell as two large walks with my friends dogs and of course a balanced healthy diet.
Yes it's hard work but the alternative is to give up and sit on the sofa and become depressed so it's easier to stick with the routine?

Other than the usual things like light box, exercise, diet, SJW etc I find getting outside between 12noon and 2pm good plus we gave our trees (leylandii hedge which had got completely out of hand) a massive prune and completely felled a lot of them. This has made a big difference to the amount of light in the house and as I am a full time at home mum this has helped with my SAD. So definitely worth pruning things which could obscure light and keep the windows clean (something I'm not good at!) I thought I would mention this as it is something that I haven't seen discussed and it has been a help to me.

I agree about the point regarding excersise. For the last 6 winters or so I've felt awful. Last winter I started doing a little jogging, not much really but managed to continue through the summer. Now I go jogging whenever I can and feel a whole lot better for it. So I suppose what I'm saying is that if you can bring yourself to do something you'll feel a lot better than you would just sitting around

I remember 2 winters ago I joined the gym for 3 months, and I didn‘t suffer at all, all winter. Maybe i was a little bit slower than usually. But i don‘t like sports!!! Also bath with the lavender or Sainbury‘s ‘pure calm‘ bath foam helped (I only have a shower now). But i keep going to sunbed, this makes all the difference, but it is hard for me to do anything, so I have to force myself to go there. (I have to force myself - to do anything)

One of the antidepressants that I am on is called Remeron and you take it at night and I think that it has helped me with my sleep to a certain extent. The bad thing about Remeron though is all you want to do is eat. Remeron is what they prescribe for patients who have eating disorders.
