Well, there is a massive nutritional thread which makes me dizzy just looking at it! It seems to be endless cut-and-pastes from online articles - and reading them all makes me lose the will to live! I am sure that there is plenty of good stuff in there, but depressed people have the attention span of a gnat and there is no way I could get past the first post.

I thought this might be a nice place to share what works for us - diet-wise. Where you could post up ideas for helping yourself eat better or identify foods that could reduce your SAD/depression symptoms.

My next post will be something which has really helped me.

Preparing Meals in Advance

Maybe everyone already does this, and this was a revelation only to me? However I discovered this year that I eat a lot more healthily, and I have more control over what I eat, if I prepare my meals in advance.

What I do now is each night I make my breakfast (cereal with rice/oatmilk), snacks (2 x 2 pieces of fruit), and lunch (some sort of salad with wholegrains and protein and raw vegetables) - to take with me to work.

On the weekend I make a couple of vegetarian stews/casseroles for my evening meals. I freeze these in meal-sized portions and defrost one for the following day. I steam some fresh vegetables and stir them into my heated-up casserole.

I still have days when the carbs cravings are hellish and I eat my bodyweight in chocolate. But I have more days when I am eating at least something which is wholesome.

Sounds like a good idea Lodger. I've been trying to pre-prepare meals and it does help me to eat more healthily. But I do feel like I spend all my time cooking and preparing food in the evenings lately.

I've found that taking Omega 3 supplements really seems to be helping me to feel more alert and awake during the day.

I find it's sometimes helpful when I get a sweet craving to have dried fruit as it's very sweet and can take my mind off chocolate for a while!

Welcome to the forum Lodger.

I'm sure that giving meals some thought in advance is a great help to me eating well, I know that eating well helps to prevent (not stop!) those days when the only thing that will do is carbs!

I try and make sure that for the winter I don't just lob lumps of meat into the freezer, but to make it into home made ready meals, so that if I don't feel moved to cook that night, or if we're busy, then I all I have to do is to cook rice/potatoes/pasta/veg. I try and have some of those in the freezer as well...casseroled red cabbage, mushy peas, bubble and squeak seem less like frozen veg than the stuff that comes in bags. I have vegetarian options as well, nut burgers, curries, refried beans etc etc

I do batch cook and try and keep a ready made supply of home made tomato sauce (for pasta and pizzas), ready cooked pulses (not keen on cans) and other building blocks for quick meals. I favour cooking from scratch over shop bought stuff, but I realise that this is personal preference, but I'm sure it's good for us,as well as being kind to my food budget.

The nutrition thread is comprehensive, but like you, at this time of year in particular I couldn't tackle it. I think it's also rather too easy to get hung up on all that, I feel for me that my time and effort are best spent getting home cooked food on the table.

In other threads you will find much information about what helps other people and I'm sure you'll find lots of inspiration for things you can do in the realms of self help.

Thank you PurpleIvy and Bagpuss.

PurpleIvy - I like the sound of red cabbage casserole. I think that I will make some this weekend. Red cabbage goes nicely with (tinned) tuna and rice - so it may end up being a tuna, rice and red cabbage casserole.

I also cook my pulses in advance. I have about half a dozen one-cup-sized portions of a variety of beans in my freezer. I then defrost the ones which I think will suit the stew or casserole I am thinking of cooking. I only cook batches beans for freezing once a month - so it doesn't end up being a big time imposition.

Bagpuss - I know what you mean about spending a lot of time preparing food. However I have a nice little system going which means I only spend about an hour in the kitchen each night - this includes cooking evening meal, eating it, washing up, and preparing my food for the next day. I tend to prepare the next day's food whilst I am cooking my evening meal. I am big on multi-tasking!

I will look into into your Omega 3 recommendation. I take Starflower oil (3x1000mg/day) because I get PMT and this affects my moods all month. I squeeze the capsules into my breakfast and my lunch salad, as I find I absorb it better than swigging it down with water.

You must be very efficient, I'm impressed! I think it's a really good idea to prepare things in advance, I think I need to work on my multi-tasking!

Bagpuss - I have started taking Omega 3 fish oil, on your recommendation. It is from Holland and Barrett 1000mg (180mg EPA and 120mg DHA). I am taking 3 a day. Is that similar to what you are taking?

Yes, similar, but I'm taking Omega 3 Supreme 1360 mg so just taking it once a day as that's what the instructions say. I hope they work for you too!

Hi Bagpuss
I take Omega-3 Fish oil 3 1000mg gel caps a day. I find that helps me alot. So has the holiday just 5 more days and then back to the snow.
I have started eating better in the sun plus I walk 15k or more a day down here. I have been eating alot of fresh fruit and veges plus smaller portions of carbs One chocolate every couple of days sometimes none at all. I have gone down in weight now about 40lbs since November and I intend to keep it off. I have reverse symptoms. Summer symptoms in winter instead of winter in winter. I want to fit into the bathingsuit I bought well down here on holiday. So when I get home I will have to start preparing things ahead of time because I will be spending alot of time at the gym trying to keep up with the 15km that I do well I am here on holiday.

Hi SGL, glad the omega 3 is helping you too. The holiday sounds great, I can imagine how much better you must feel with all that sun. I have been trying to eat more fresh fruit and veg too and less carbs. Also, I'm trying to cut down on sugar and caffeine. I think it's given me more energy. Enjoy the rest of your hol xx

More leafy greens for vitamin K is good for you. Fresh fruit any kind will do I hadnt't had any sugar until I hit the sun and even then not much.
I found these vege chips which are really good for you weight watches diet recomends them to you. I now checked it out and I can get them in Canada as well. So if you want to snack a little they are good for you because they are veges not potatoe chips. ONLY 3 more full days sad.
