SAD is really stressing my marriage. Is anyone else having this problem?

I find that I get a lot more irritable at this time of the year, but my wife copes very well with my moods. a few years ago we used to get more stressed but I guess we have both learnt how to deal with it.

I'm not married, but I suffer INTENSELY from SAD, it has wrecked my relationships with my dad when I stayed with him for one winter and my aunt and uncle with whom I lived for four years in gloomy Canada during uni. Irreparably damaged those relationships - although there were a lot of other factors to take into consideration that can't be discussed here. SAD is so unnecessary. I may have to move back to the UK next month - I know SAD might return. Gosh.

You'd tell me to stay here nearer the equator, but things aren't as clear cut as move near the equator and all your life is sorted.

I just moved to NYC from Orlando, FL and I'm having a really hard time adjusting this winter. All I can think about is moving back to FL. My husband keeps calling me a "baby" because he doesn't understand. I try and remind myself how wonderful my life is all the time but all I can think about is how miserable I am here. Is there a way to over-come these feelings?

No, I have not tried therapy or a lamp. Where would I find a SAD lamp? The early sunset does not bother me..it's more the cold weather. Does the lamp help with that?

Florida girl, my SAD lamp really helped me, they can improve you mood overall, so maybe that would help you to cope with everything better, including the cold weather. Therapy is a good idea too, it might help to be able to talk to someone who is objective and isn't emotionally attached to you.

Snowflake, I found SAD affecting my relationship with my partner this winter. I was so emotional and would snap over every little thing and cry all the time, I didn't feel in control of myself at all. He doesn't really understand about SAD, I tried to tell him it's recognised by the medical profession as a real disorder, but I don't think he understands how much it can affect people and how real it is. I went to my GP and now I'm on AD's, which seem to be helping with my mood, therefore my relationship has improved. I'm also going to get counselling.

Florida girl, I forgot to say you can try out SAD lamps for a trial period to see if they work, as they are quite expensive. There is a section on this website about them, I think under 'products', but there might also be other companies that you can do a trial with.

I have experienced relationship difficulties to the extreme! I have probably suffered from SAD for at least 18 years now but only diagnosed about 3 years ago. Since then my boyfriend and I of 7 years broke up and I have tried to have 2 more relationships only to break up not long after. I have purchased a light and really helps. I first made the mistake of closing my eyes while in front of the light but you must keep your eyes open so everything is going well now! I'm now afraid to get involved with anyone as even though they say they understand when you have a bad day all understanding seems to go out the door:( Is anyone else experiencing this?

Hey everyone. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. I'm usually a very happy, outgoing, ambitious person. Lately i've noticed the last week, i've gone from those things to totally opposite. It's hit me so fast that it's overwhelming. I'm feeling very anxious, lack of motivation, fatigue, depressed, non-social, and I feel guilty for no reason. Everything feels so unreal, and it's all a bad dream. To make things worst,I feel emotionally detached. I obsess about my feelings for my girlfriend, if my feelings are true or not, and it makes me have more anxiety. I've never suffered from anything like this before, I was just wondering if you guys/gals have the same feelings with relationships, could this be SAD?

Hi - yes sounds like it! The good news is you can purchase a light - I have a Day Light as they are easy to find in Canada (I'm from Ontario). As long as I sit under my light for 1 hr a day the world is a better place! I would also recommend exercise of some sort everyday and vitamen D!

Thank you so much! I do exercize regularly, but I do not have a light, can you buy them anywhere? It's so frustrating to feel this way, and to feel emotionally detached while in a relationship. You felt that way before as well? confused I guess
