Hi there,

For about 3 or 4 years now, I've been getting terrible depression over the winter period. I never really consider it until my mom said to me 'WHY THE HELL ARE YOU ALWAYS LIKE THIS AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR?!'

Last year I was hit really hard with depression towards the early start of December (It built up over November). It got that bad that the doctor had to sign me off for two weeks off work and I was told to seek councelling, but realistically, I can't understand why Im getting depressed. Financially I'm ok, and normally I'm a very bouncy and happy person.

Just recently I've noticed I'm starting to feel the same again, suffering headaches occassionally and becoming very moody and to myself. Even my boss keeps asking me if I'm ok.

Yesterday I was sat at my desk and my colleague asked me if I was ok, and I just felt like crying, and I dont even know why.

I'm considering going to my doctor about it again, I dont want it to get as bad as it was last year.

Could SAD be a possibility? I can't understand why else I would feel this way.

It is very possible thatyou have sad but it is always a good idea to see your doctor and tell him how low you feel, really hope you start to feel better soon. Please keep posting and tell us how you get on.

It's always a good idea to make sure there are no underlying health reasons for your mood changes. Your story sounds very familiar!

Well I've noticed that Im feeling more and more tired. Last night I got home from work, cooked dinner and fell to sleep on the sofa at 8:20pm, which I never normally do.

I also have to keep apologising to my partner as I keep nearly biting her head off D=

Your doctor will probably prescribe antidepressants. If you have not taken them before then please think carefully as although they help many people they also are non responsive to many and just make you feel worse. Regardless of what doctors say SSRI's can be difficult to get off.
My non medical recommendations would be to buy a light box and start supplementing with vitamin d3 and l-trytophan and book an appointment with a nutitionist who can advise you the correct dosage for you for the above supplements.

I've just got back from the doctors; I feel really stupid as I just burst out crying. She said that I have got SAD and am suffering moderate depression because of it.

They've put me on anti-depressants and want to see me again in 2 weeks. She's also given me a doctors note to have 2 weeks off work, especially as I need to adjust to the anti-depressants.

But I'm thinking that I should go into work, and I dont think I will take the time off as I need the money.

Stacey

Be careful with "getting on" AD's as i advised above, speaking from personal experience it was the worst thing i ever did.

See the forum link below with over 1000 posts of people trying to get off Citalopram an SSRI

I know all people have diferent experiences but quite a few have bad.

Any success i have had with recovering from depression is via food supplements, diet and exercise and most definetly not AD's

Keep us posted with how you get on with whatever you decide

If anyone reading this now or in the future would like more specific advise on nutrition or AD experiences or CBT or Accupuncture (ive tried them all) them send me a pm

Thanks for your replies Paul and Dean.

I had a good chat with the doctor about the side affects of the anti-depressants and my concerns as well as a chat with my mom. My mom has been on anti-depressants before and she handle it well and got off them well; So I've decided to go ahead with it and took my first one today.

Im not very good with food and supplements as I'm a vegetarian that doesn't eat vegetables :\ so I think trying to adjust my diet to make me feel better would make things harder for me.

The doctor did say the anti depressants could make me feel worse for the first week, so I'm dreading going back to work, as well as trying to explain to my boss whats wrong with me, but my head is still saying to reject the 2 weeks sign off that the doctors given me. Hopefully my boss will understand if I feel the need to go home at any point.

My partner and friends are being very supportive. Shockingly last night my dad called me and he said 'Hey Stacey, I just wanted to call you to tell you I love you'. I nearly burst out crying then.

So right now my emotions are really up and down, like this morning I feel like I could cry after the smallest little thing.

I feel like things are going to be difficult to get used to, but my friends are encouraging me that at least I know, I can find ways to make it better in the future.

So today I want to try and rest my head a bit as it's all over the place. I'm thinking I'll get my partner to go with me for a walk with the dogs to cheer me up a bit.

Theres so much I feel I need to learn... But is there really?

This post probably makes no sense at all or is just up and down with feelings and for that, Im sorry.

Hi Stacey, what tablets has the doctor given you? I have just changed my medication to Mirtazapine, antidepressents normally take a couple of weeks to work properly so try not to worry, hopefully you will soon start to feel better. Im also a vegetarian but try to eat lots of veg and fruit. One thing my doctor wants me to do is take lots of exercise, I shall do my best and see what happens. Ive been off work for a week or so so the tablets can start to work, Im hoping to go back on Wednesday.
Take care and please keep posting

The doctor has put me on Lustral/Sertraline tablets. She said it really would benefit me to have the two weeks off work whilst I get used to them, but I really can't afford the time off work, so I'm just going to have to bare my teeth and get on with things I guess.

I had a really restless night last night, but I couldnt find the energy to get up. I set my alarm at 9:20am and finally got myself up at about 11:30am, even though I was just lying there and not sleeping.

Thanks for your continued advice Paul.

So, I tried to tell my boss about it and ended up getting myself all really upset again. She's given me two days off work and wants me to call her this afternoon if I feel I need more time.

Monday was really hard for me and I spent the majority of the time crying. Today Im feeling alright, so Im thinking of going back to work tomorrow.

Im going back to work tomorrow, I work in a High School, luckily my line manager is very supportive so I should be ok. Stacey, you need to think about yourself, if you still feel very low, you might need a few more days off. Please take care of yourself.

I hope you get on ok Paul.

I've told my boss that I'm going in tomorrow. Its 22:29 and my heads just started really messing with me, so I think I'm going to call it a night and wish myself luck with work tomorrow.
