Ok being using mu light and it hasn't really giving me the boost I was hoping for...college has become really anxiety filled and I feel like I'm starting to drop out...SO don't wanna take anti-depreesants and was thinking of using 5htp...so just wondering if anyone has used it? And also can you get it on prescription in the UK because as far as I know you can't get it on prescroption in Ireland and I would probably have to get it off the internet...

Thank You for your time

Hi HG

I've been using it for a couple of years, I get it from Holland & Barrett, the health food shop - it's a bit pricey but they do 2 for 1's sometimes. It's probably an idea to check the internet (or ask your GP) if you're on other meds ot have other health problems. It made me a bit headachy at the start but no other ill effects since then. Good Luck.

as an alternative to 5-htp you may want to try l-trytophan, ive had good results taking trytophan 30mins before bedtime each evening. I also take l-tyrosine each morning now to lift my mood during the day

Hi Happy Girl. :o)

I used 5-htp for the first time last year after I'd done extensive research on t'internet about it. To be honest it was the best thing I did. I hate taking AD's mainly for the upsetting side effects it gives me (hair loss, feeling emotionally 'flat' and others). I found that 5-htp didn't give me any side effects, stopped the bad dreams stopped me waking up with the 'fuzzy head' I have when in SAD mode. I did discuss it with my doctor some time afterwards though so she was aware that I had used it.

You say that it is illegal in Ireland? Do you know why?

Holland and Barrett also sell it on their internet site which is where I first bought mine and got a special buy one get one free deal on a pack of 120 capsules (240) at £25. 120 tablets will last 4 months which is more than enough to see me through my 'bad patch' which usually starts mid september until Christmas. As far as I am concerned it's £25 well spent. Not sure if any headaches were as a result of the tablets or more to do with the high level of anxiety I experience or just a bit of dehydration as I don't eat when I'm stressed.

I would advise you to do as much research as possible before you decide if they are for you. You may find that they're not. I made myself aware of the risks involved so I could make an informed decision that was right for me. In my case I decided to take them but then I'm all in favour of taking responsibility for my own actions and not blaming any stupidity on my part on anyone else. :o)

For info, although I've been great this year (no SAD to speak of) I've started taking them again last week as this winter seems to be dragging on a bit and I find I'm starting to struggle now. Hopefully all should be good again by the end of February when spring is just around the corner. ;o)

So again, the decision is yours. Just make sure you know the risks involved.
