Hi - just found this site having finally worked out the most probable reason for my state of mind (and health) at the moment.
It seems that I can last up to Christmas feeling reasonably normal, although I dont like Christmas either, and then if I dont get away in the sun in January, then by now I might as well forget doing anything which is and feels such a waste.
Now that my lightbulb (or should I say SAD light) moment has come, I have looked back in my calendar over the past 5 years or so and can now work out the reason for my really bad times. My family and others have always joked about me wanting to go on holiday at this time of year but now I know its because my body actually is telling me that I have to for my own mental health state. The only problem is a lack of money!
A very good friend of ours also suffers and until now I didnt sympathise with him and thought his behaviour was due to other problems, but now I realise what he is going through.

I did reasonably well in January. Almost started to feel like I'd beaten it--then February hit. I'm glad to hear it's not just me. What's everyone's worst symptom? I know they're all awful, but which one buggers you the most? For me, it's social discomfort/withdrawal. I hate it!!!

Yes - the feeling of not wanting to go out anywhere is not good. I even have trouble walking out to the garden although it would probably do me good. The constant tiredness is also a major problem.

Same for me, social discomfort and withdrawal and lack of confidence is the worst. I just don't want to be around people at the moment. It feels like a huge effort to make conversation, does anyone else find that?

Absolutely, Bagpuss.
Sometimes it's hard to even string a complete sentence together. I adore my family but it's become so hard to come out of my shell and interact with them. I can deal with not feeling like going out and being around lots of strangers, but when it's my own family I feel like a failure :(

This is my first year with sad, that's if it is, I was normal, then in around late january bam... something hit me like a book, less energy, super sad, didn't want to work, confused over feelings due to lack of feelings, less ambition, cry spells, didn't enjoy anything. I'm on antidepressants at the time being, feeling a lot better. I find the worst symptom for me, well two, lack of feeling, therefore confused about my relationship with my gf, and kind of a heartburn feeling in my throat and chest. (Which is caused by anxiety, I've heard). Can anyone else relate?

January & February are the worst months for sure. I think the main thing is I just want to sleep all the time and not so much because I'm that tired its just that I dont want to live through the days, I just want to hibernate until Spring! If only it was that easy! I do get alot of anxiety also and it makes it worse when we have miserable weather. I never get depressed in the summer.

Definitely February, and this year for the first time in years I've been off work for most of the month. I hate the joylessness of it, the not engaging in anything, not looking forward to anything and not even having the concentration to lose myself in a book.
As I write, we have a beautiful sunny day and my Eyore is turning into Tigger. Waaa-hooooo!

It starts in November for me and goes on for a miserable 4 months until early spring, tired, weak, and anti social, cant be botherd to do anything other than think about running away to a hot climate so i can worship the sun.It also affects my work as a self employed carpenter, often working outside for upto 8 hrs a day on a dirty building site with blue fingers with cold, thinking of the summer days of long hours of sun light though not necessary warm BUT BRIGHT ! dull and greyness springs to mind thinking of winter months, April brings a semi smile to my face as the clocks change for the better, have i come out of my hybination ? have i been set free from the grips of winter blues ! yeah but only till the next due in a few months which seem to nowadays come too quick.Im always thinking why wasnt i born in a warm climate, could never be an eskimo !!
