Well I was hoping the inevitable wouldnt happen but today it did.

I am an Office assistant at a building services firm, and at the moment my manager is on holiday.

He told me not to worry, that there was nothing outstanding etc etc as I requested a meeting with him to find out what I would be expected to deal with whilst he is away.

As expected, that was a complete fib and there is just tonnes of stuff he left half finished, not started etc. For example, big orders that need to be sent overseas - he told the client it has been ordered and I find he hasnt ordered it at all.For the last week I have been muddling through it all, taking on loads that I am not really authorised to deal with and have never done before. I have worked late every night and the stress has been getting me more and more frustrated every day.

Today it just got too much and I ended up breaking down at my desk. I am very fragile at the moment anyway due to the clock change etc and they know this.

Feel very used but being the only one in the offic e at the moment, if I dont try and deal with this stuff it wont get done and there will be massive problems with our projects overseas etc.

My boss just laughs it off and says 'getting stressed are we?' when I ring him up which is bang out of order and I have told him so.

I understand he is on holiday but he should have arranged to have someoe to deal with all this in his absence - I am only on £12,000 a year to deal with this rubbish!

Thanks for listening, really needed to vent lol! x

Hi all

Still not good on the work front - have had another meeting with my boss but nothing was listened to as always happens.

On a positive note I acknowledge things are not likely to change, so I have updated my CV and applied for a will drafter position that was in our local paper this week. Slightly less money but it looks perfect for me so I dont mind at all.

I have spent 6 years in a job and feel I have outgrown it to be honest.

Fingers crossed! (I have emailed it and also hand delivered a hard copy in case the email is not received or something - as you can guess I really want this job!)

Hello Sleepybird, Nice to see you back! Good luck with the job application.
Don't know if this is any help but SAD can be categorised as a Disability under the Disability Discrimination Act / Equality Act, so your employer has to consider making reasonable adjustments to your workplace if you have told them of your problems. laughing it off and giving you a hard time when you're ill are not options. Look at ACAS's website for more info.

Hi Nina!

Thank you for the support, also thank you to LCHerts and Purple Ivy :-)

Got an interview tomorrow at 3pm! Have researched online and this job appears to be listed with most of the agencies, so hoping that the fact I was proactive by hand delivering my application and also the fact they wont have to pay an agency fee for me mght help!

Have been out and got a smart shirt and smart shoes so prepared! I have to do a typing test apparently but should be ok as all I do is typing at the moment.

Havent had to go for a job interview for 6 years lol

Oh and Nina, I could actually get them done anyway as I also have water on the brain, and over the 6 years they have always assumed I wont remember anythng I am told and my boss also used to take the mick out of that too. Sad state of affairs eh! x

Had the interview which went as well as I could have hoped, really dont think I could have said or done any more to make an impression!

The typing test consisted of literally just typing a list of names and addresses into excel. That was it! It was timed for 15 mins and I completed it within about 10 mins. I think they are expecting lots of school leavers due to the low salary, so hopng that me being a bit older with more experience may help!

Had a very bad afternoon when I got back to work - my boss is back in Africa and actually blamed me on an email for a delivery not going out on time. He worded it 'how am I going to explain this to *****, I have a meeting with them tomorrow. This is unaccaptable'. I didnt place the order, he did, all I did was supply an order no! I waited a while and sent a firmly worded email back to him saying that I am not going to be blamed for something that a) is not my fault and b) I had no involvement in at all.

They are looking for a scapegoat and I am not being one. I was going to be loyal and wait for him to come back before handng in my notice. He comes back on the 18th so if they offer me the job I will phone him up to hand in my notce, then email a letter.

S*d loyalty after they way they are treating me.

Makes me angry that they think its ok to just treat me like this and i'll just take it.

Hi Purple Ivy, they said they have interviews all this week and I should hear next week.

I totally gave it my all so if I dont get one of the 2 positions available i'll be so disappointed.

Struggling quite bad with the SAD today, getting out of bed was a nightmare...

Hope you are ok xxx

Hi Sleepybird,

I have to say I'm really impressed that you can do a job interview at this time of year, even through all the SAD. I always think interviews need you to be positive and enthused about yourself and I can't pull that off in December at all - the best I can say about myself is "functioning"! You should be proud of yourself, and best of luck!

Thanks Nina! Normally I wouldnt even consider making such a dramatic change but it has got that bad where I am at the moment I just had to.
I am sitting at my desk now in despair cos im having such a rough time here but trying to be positive and look to the future.
Its very difficult to be motivated here atm as they are just being totally unacceptable with the pressure they are putting on me, I am quite close to breaking point but I can see light at the end of the tunnel... xxx

Would your doctor sign you off sick for a week. When I pitched up at my GP's in a right mess he decided I needed peace and quiet. I thought he was nuts, but he was insistent that was what I needed. He said 'Go home, look after yourself and just do as much as you feel like doing". And I had a prescription for antidepressants, bought a SAD lamp!

Hi Purple!

I have been to my doctor in the past and been signed off so it is a possbility. However I may not need to as I have just received an email from the place I had the interview asking when I could potentially start! I responded straight away and said in theory if i handed my notice in Monday I could start W/c 16 Jan as I need to give a months notice. I told them this in the interview so they are aware - just need the official job offer...

Thanks Purple! I am really excited and just want to quit now!! I am not going to jinx it by quittng then getting an email saying the other place made a mistake or something :-) I am going to email my boss my resignation whlst he is in Africa as dont want to wait til he gets back. I have the week between Xmas and New Year off anyway as holiday so technically I should only have 3 weeks to go!
I said to my hubby its a shame as by not listening to my concerns or addressing them in the slightest, they have lost the best thing they had in the company. There were only 5 people in the office - Myself, My boss, the MD and his wife (who are in Africa 9 months of the year) and the Accountant! Without me the phone wont get answered, post wont get opened, stationery wont get ordered, emails wont get answered and contracts/reports wont get typed! Oh well their loss!!

Just want to say to all of you here, if you are that unhappy at work dont let the SAD stop you movng on - I just literally powered through reading the job section in the paper, updatng a CV, applying and doing the interview. Was frazzled afterwards but I knew deep down how much of a dfference it wll make to my life to have a job I enjoy. (Ironically I used to enjoy this one til they started piling too much on me).

Will keep you updated!!

Well all wasnt as good as I thought - I kept having to chase this company for an official job offer confirming the salary discussed and what the job role is. The woman was very cagey about it and was also very informal in her emails (didnt give me a good impression of the company at all) and they finally came back with a completely different job description and a very low salary. When I queried it they just said 'oh well things have changed and this is what we are offering now' - it was for basically the same as I do now but for miles less money.

I have decided to stay where I am for now as at least I know the job (even though I dont like it) and will just keep looking.

Totally gutted though!

Just caught up with the forum Sleepybird and so sorry to hear your news. Sounds like they were trying to 'reel in' a good candidate and then change the goalposts. Not Fair! Keep looking. You know now you are employable in another place and just have to find the right position.
