I'm writing an article for a UK student magazine (catch 22) to make people aware of SAD and the winter blues as it is estimated that half a million people in the UK suffer from it. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in being quoted in my article. I will ask a few basic questions like "when did you know you first suffered from SAD" and you'll just need to type a sentence (or more if you wish) by e-mail if you prefer... It would really help me as well as many people out there who will read it. I really do hope someone will share their experience for others to read and identify with... I was hoping for at least four people. x
I have recently been diagnosed with SAD, which means that like many I had suffered from the condition from an early age without knowing it existed and virtually in silence. I am 23 years old and the effects of SAD only became apparant after college when i headed to university. I dropped out of university in december preciously because I went into depression as soon as Autumn hit the corner. At the time i had no clue why i was felling the way i was. I enrolled back into university, suffered pretty horrendously from the condition in the winter months and went through a major depression in my 2nd year. Unfortunately i had to withdraw from my studies and finally this year after suffering from mild depression in November (fortunately not severely) consulted a doctor and denoted the months I suffered in and so was officially diagnosed with SAD. I am happy that I know my condition and so can respond to it by light therapy and so forth. It had a detrimental affect on my life and studies but I am determined more than ever to conquer the condition. Many like myself suffer in silence and the key to a better life is to recognise the condition and to speak to a doctor if you think you have it.
