Hi, I'm new to the site, at last I finally get to "talk" to people who do not think I am a hypochondriac or just plain crazy!

Every summer, I go crazy enjoying the sunshine and feeling real good about things and shoving the fact that in 5 months time I,m gonna feel real bad for 5-7 months to the back of my mind.

Well this summer, I told myself that while I am capable of making changes and doing the research I am gonna try everything I can to make next winter easier (I don't think my man can take another one like the last one). In the winter I take 40mg prozac per day and did use a 10,000 lux light box (I stopped the lightbox).

Does anyone else find that no matter how well they "medicate" themselves, that having a night out on the "pop" seriously mucks up everything else and not just the day after either?

Does anyone else think it would be a good idea to stay off the booze in the winter as to be honest, the medication I am taking doesn't really touch my winter depression?

Would be grateful for any points of view........................ :D

Yes I think it leaves me feeling low for a few days afterwards, I mean apart from the poisonous effects of alcohol it includes huge doses of sugar which isn't good either.

What I feel is that no matter what I use in the winter it all feels a long slog and I suppose I feel it's more down to living life round sad and finding the compromises and triggers which make life more difficult and planning for them. I do value exercise greatly and joining a gym was abrilliant idea as cycling can become more of a hassle in winter (extra clothing layers, batteries for lights, strong winds, minus temperatures!).

yes I totally agree in winter it can take me 3 days to recover from a night out instead of 1

It might be a good idea to see your GP for a change of meds if they aren't doing anything for you. There is no point taking something if it's gonna do you no good. Thats if you want to stay on meds. Unfortunately, you can't drink whilst on Prozac so that is probably what is making you feel like crap.

I was on Prozac before I changed to my current meds. Whilst I was on them I went to a new years eve party and had quite a few vodkas. I had a really bad reaction cause of being on the meds and drinking. Just a thought, maybe you are having a reaction to the mixture of medication and alcohol.

I don't drink much or often as a rule. I had a couple on a couple of occasions over the easter holiday and on the third twigged why I felt so drunk on so little and so bad afterwards! dOH! Have decided I need to avoid totally for the next couple of weeeks until I've come off the med completely.

Not looking forward to next Christmas.... booze freee!

Thanks for your input. I know I've got SAD, but there is this small part of me that thinks "hey, what if its not real and I am just kinda crazy?" So I kind of carry on the same way in the winter as I do the summer - drinking same amount of alchohol (spelt wrong!) etc even with the meds in the stubborn hope that I don't need to change my life to fit in with SAD.

Do any of you guys totally stop drinking in the winter becuase its just another "depressive" or becuase your on meds?

Oh my god - the weather at the mo is just amazing!!! :D

I don't drink much or often as a rule simply because

a) even without medication it makes me feel cr*p the next day, even in moderation

b) I try and watch my weight and I would rather eat than drink!

I do like drinks... red wine, gin and tonic........ a nice sauvignon blanc etc and occasionally will get my 'red wine head' on! But I think I shall have to be careful with the meds and alcohol mix after last week!

I don't tend to drink at all anymore. I used to have a few now and again, more so when I was having a girlie night but don't even drink then anymore. I didn't make a conscious effort to give up it just sort of happened. I don't really enjoy it and hate the way it makes me feel the next day.

I used to love a glass or six of wine or a vodka and diet coke but it never crosses my mind now. I think it could be something to do with the fact that I don't feel in control anymore when I have a drink. It affects my co-ordination really badly and I end up falling over or dropping/knocking something over and I feel really embarrassed. I don't know whether this is caused by the combo of drink and meds?

Does it affect anyone else like this? I mean after a couple of glasses of wine, not a couple of bottles lol :roll:

Yes, I'm just like that (what a lightweight, eh?) but I think it's just because I'm not a big drinker as I don't take anti despressant medication.
