Hi to all,
I would really appreciate some advice on weaning off my anti depressants which I have been taking since end of September last year. This has been my first winter taking them. Having been on them for almost five months, and with spring approaching I just wondered when and how to start weaning off? (My GP is little support so can't be bothered to waste my time. Haven't seen a doctor since I was prescibed them back in September!) I vaguely remember the GP telling me to take them on alternate days and then every third day, etc, but for how long I wonder?
Should I start soon if it's going to take a while or can I do it over a couple of weeks and leave it 'til March?
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Robbo,
I'm hoping to wean off my anti d's soon.
My G.P is pretty sympathetic so I will make an appointment to see him soon to get some advice, I'll let you know how I get on.
Do you mind if I ask what you're taking and how much?
You don't have to answer that !!
All the best

Hi again,
I'm on citalopram 10mg daily. Quite a small dose I believe, as my GP said I could take 20mg if I had no beneficial effects. I am feeling so much better since taking them that I am really worried about stopping them and feeling rough again. I'm sure this is normal.

Hi Robbo - I take 20mg per day Citalopram year-round, as although I'm strongly seasonal I can become depressed in the summer too. My GP (who's quite supportive) originally put me on 10 mg per day but commented that that would be the normal dose for a rather frail elderly person and 20 mg would be a normal dose for me as a 40-year old woman. I didn't get much benefit on only 10 mg, hence the change to 20 mg.

In any event, if you're going to come off any anti-depressant you must do it gradually, as I'm sure you already realise. You should probably see your GP again to clarify how to come off the tablets. I thought my GP was a bit off-hand when I first saw him about SAD, but realised after I'd seen him several times he was actually quite supportive - It might be worth giving your GP a bit longer! It might be a bit early to come off the medication if your SAD problem is severe - I've found in past years I don't really feel well again until Easter. Good luck!

Robbo, honestly, as Louise suggests, I'd wait a while. When I used to take antiD's for SAD I never considered weaning myself off until March was done and dusted. Any possible dip back into the black pond of despair is just not worth risking.

I take prozac (fluoxetine) from the end of Septmeber to about the middle of March. I've never had a problem weaning myself off them. I expect to halve my dose (1 every other day) at the beginning of March, and I'll be off them by the end of March.

Hi Robbo
I take anti depressants because I have clinical depression as well as SAD. I'm on seroxat at the moment and I've found if you halve your dose, so take 10mg for a week and then halve that to 5mg for a week and so on, it's easier to come off them. Belive me I know because they change my drugs every 2-3 months and I've got to step off one before I can start another.
