I am shortsighted and wear glasses - does anybody know if it safe to wear them while using my lightbox? I have picked up an idea from somewhere that my glasses might intensify the light and risk damage to my eyes....I think my mental image is using a magnifying glass to focus the rays of the sun. Grateful for feedback.

Hi Alex,

I wear glasses too. Glasses correct the focus of your eye, so I'd expect the intesity of light on the back of your eye wearing your glasses to be the same as someone who does not have to wear glasses.

To date, I have not come accross anything suggesting there is a hazard associated with glasses, but there are warnings regarding certain eye conditions.

I'm very interested to hear what other people think, especially the experts. You might find your optician can help.

I hope this helps, but do get an experts opinion as I'm only a fellow sufferer :-)

The only thing that I would say about this is that I tended to get sore eyes when using my light box - so much so that I gave up using it. At the moment I use remedies prescribed by my homoeopath. The trouble is where DO you go for advice? I have given up on my doctor and the only doctor who I can find locally who is sympathetic to complementary therapies has no room on his books! I've just joined The SAD association - their web site is appended to this message - to see if I can get some more info. but I feel that we should all get together and form an online community. What do you think? Have we got the combined energy to manage it?!! :)
All the best,

Paul

This is a better link re eye safety. There are some further links in the text of the article that are good to look at as well.
Also, don't miss part 2 of the article, either.

I am an optician, as an optician I spend most of my time in a dark room, not good if it turns out that it looks likely you have SAD.

Anyway as an optician I could seen no reason as to why wearing glasses should cause a problem with light boxes. Glasses are purely a focusing device, without them the sam amount of light enters the eye its just that with them the light is better focused.

Light can however be a problem if you are reading and some people suffer from the glare that this produces usually leading to headaches. This is not because of the glasses but more as a result of the act of reading with a strong light which is in extreme contrast with the surrounding light levels.

As a seperate note some people should find that they can read better in a bright light such as that generated by a light box without their reading glasses. This is because the light reaching the retina is that much better and seondly the light causes the pupil size to reduce which has an indirect effect of reducing the blur at the retina.

None of this is scientific information regarding SAD but cliical observations made in practice. I will attempt a journal search to see if any research has been done in this area and let you know.

Hope this helps, now I am of to buy a sunrise lamp seeing as most of you seem to rave about them.
