Hi, :D

Where abouts in the uk do you live?

Does anyone know if there are any parts of the uk where sad is not so bad.

I live in Hertfordshire and was wondering if it would be worth considering a move to another part of the uk.

Has anyone got any opinions on this.

Racheal.

I dont think it will really matter where in the uk you move to, in fact i would move to another country all together if i could.

As uk is so far from the equator and we get less sunlight in winter it wont really make any difference. At least i dont think it would.

Hello,
good to see another new face :) . I have lived in Somerset, London and now Yorkshire and to be frank theoretically (for me) it is better to live in Somerset weather wise but not by much. I think unless you are looking at the South of France or further it won't make much of an impact on your life. Unless you are planning to move abroad I think it would be better for you to be where you want to live and manage your condition there. If you move away factors such as leaving family, friends and stretching finances could also make you depressed!

Hi bramblebush, I'd say nowhere! I was diagnosed with SAD when living on the south coast. East of England gets less rain so somewhere like SE Kent might be a bit better, I think Cornwall gets more sun but also rain. Really to make a big difference you're probably best off out of Northern Europe unless you can find a microclimate which isn't cloudy very often.

Dreaming of sunny skies,

I've been banging on all day to the long suffering Main Man in my life, begging him to move to the South of France with me, Italy maybe. All this brought on by feeling trapped by the annual (every blooming year) black snare of winter. But reality has it, as Sid says, that too many other changes like leaving sons and family/friends would bring on other traumas. But, I still dream about it all the time, though we will probably never do it as in the summer here I am the life and soul and don't even think about it, and when winter comes I am too full of self doubt to be brave enough to do it anyway. Hmm, Catch22 ? Julie

Hi there,

I live in Hertfordshire too, where abouts do you live? I'm just south of Cambridge.

I'm actually in Hull at the moment though, at Uni. Last year was the worst I've ever been but being homesick / eating badly / stress of work etc all could have had an effect. I cant help you with your question though as I'm here during the winter and home (Herts) during the summer, so not a very accurate comparison!!

Follow this link to another topic on the forum - someone else living in Hull! Maybe we should form a team - no on 2nd thoughts I can't be bothered!

Maybe some clever person could design an interactive map and we can all click on where we live and see if there are any SAD clusters???

Wow - too much brain work went into that idea. Night night!

Hi,

I live in Hertfordshire too. Trust me, it's better than the last few places I've lived (weather is the same, just the locals are better!)... except for one place....... Sydney!

Yep, 12,000 miles away. Just the nicest weather and SO many places to go out and take advantage of it (I actually worked the hardest I ever have there, 12-15 hour days BUT I sat 2 feet away from a 15ft high window overlooking the harbour!). SO MUCH beautiful sunshine all day. I have no recollection of SAD symptoms what-so-ever.

My finace and I are in the middle of organising a way to get back there. I regret leaving every single day.

If you have lots of family and/or are close to them then it's a bit drastic but I reckon somewhere in Europe an hour or two's budget flight away would be a good option!

Definitely Cornwall. near to the sea. I always find the light is better near the sea, and Cornwall is gorgeous. I'm stuck in the Midlands, and hate being so ar away from the sea.

Dorset, particulary around the swanage/poole area. they seem to have thier own weather system where in the winter it stays pretty warm and rarely snows.

Ive spent every summer of my life there on holiday. its a great area, so beautiful and the weather is normally (this summer being an exception) amazing! last yr it was so hot i had to walk around in a bikini for 2 weeks.

Definately suggest it as a place to go visit. Ive been in february and even then the sun was out all week! looking forward to my february trip this winter... should give me a nice lift!

Research conducted by Kuller, Ballal, Laike and Mikellides reported that 11% of people in the UK and in Sweden suffer from fairly or very string SADness in the winter months, compared with less than 1% in Saudi Arabia.

Seasonal disturbance has apparently also been documented in Alaska, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Niger, Norway, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and Central USA. So I would say...get as far south as you can....however.....

SAD has also been identified in Antarctica, Australia and South Africa....so dont take the going south thing to extremes!!

In theory I understand that if you live on a south facing hill the landscape is tilted towards the sun, intensifying the fall of light on the land.....but again I should think it is pretty marginal.

I suggest you dont move further north, or to scandinavia, where I have heard SAD is vary much more prevalent.

I'm near Oxford, and do find it significantly better than when I lived in Cheshire/Lancashire....I wonder if the light reflecting off cotswold stone helps....but it's pretty thin evidence.

Good Luck

Aardvark
