Hi everyone perhaps you can help me. I went to gp today and whilst there i mentioned about SAD and feeling better after using light therapy. She has agreed to write a letter for my employers to say i need to use it in work. She said she couldnt give me a definate diagnosis of sad although it did seem likely especially if i have felt better after light therapy.

Anyway my question is this, i want to apply for a new job with regular hours (9-5), am i entitled to put SAD on the application form where it asks about disabilities, or do i need a definate diagnosis for this?? Employers have taken one look at my sickness record in the past and run a mile, at least this would guarantee me an interview! Thanks inadvance clare xx

(ps didnt use lightbox for 2 days as working long days(7.30-9pm) and i felt very very bad this morning just eaten three GF croissants and 2 packets of crisps!) oops

hello,
Well on a recent form to do with equal opportunities it seems to be fine for people to express they have a disability and should be taken seriously whether or not they have been officially diagnosed but honestly it depends where you work. If you apply for a job at my brother in laws butchers shop he will tell you to get your arse out of bed! I work for a council as a mental health worker so they are quite 'politically correct' but if you have to work in the real world it might be better to judge it as required for each post. Human nature generally takes over ! It is important to get the light box accepted at work, it makes my life a lot easier. what work do you do?

Hi Clare,
Good to hear from you. Was wondering how you were getting on.
My feeling is, that if you are honest about your SAD and you can prove that your working life will be less affected by regular treatment, then your employers will have to listen to this.
Are you planning to use your lightbox on your breaks? There's no way I could use mine at work unless I was given dedicated time. As a nurse myself, I am on my feet walking around all day. I assume it is the same for you?
Best wishes Clare.
Let us know how you get on.
