Feel light

From better mornings to improved mood, our light therapy products can help make life feel brighter for you

At Lumie, we harness the power of light to help people live happier, healthier lives. Modern living disconnects us from our environment and our bodies, but when we use technology to live more naturally - to work with us, and not against us - we feel more in sync with the world, and ourselves. Having invented the world's first wake-up light in 1992, Lumie has dedicated more than three decades to pioneering research, design and development of light therapy lamps to promote circadian well-being, alleviate symptoms of winter blues, enhance sleep and waking and improve performance and daytime alertness.

Life-changing wake-up lights

Lumie wake-up lights are like a personal sunrise, a gradually brightening light that gently rouses you from sleep so that you feel naturally wide awake, more energised and ready for the day ahead. At bedtime, a fading sunset creates an environment where sleep comes easily, leaving you rested and refreshed when you next wake.

Mood-boosting daylight lamps

Lumie bright light therapy lamps bring the mood-boosting powers of sunlight to wherever you are. When daylight hours are limited (think: autumn and winter) and time spent indoors increases, many people experience fatigue, sluggishness, and irritability due to inadequate light exposure. Bright light therapy mimics natural daylight to support mood, energy and alertness and alleviate symptoms of winter blues.

our story

30+ years of bright ideas

Ever since we pioneered the first wake-up light, we’ve worked tirelessly to perfect it. To reproduce the subtle shifts in sunlight throughout the morning and evening for better sleep, energy and mental well-being. From our wake-up lights to our therapy lamps, we deliver the right light, wherever and whenever you need it most. Our advanced engineering means you get nuanced and intentional luminescence that’s as close to nature as technology gets.

1991

Building on his keen interest in circadian rhythms, Steve Hayes founded Outside In and travelled to Utah to source the first bright light therapy lamps that he went on to sell.

1992

Inspired by early clinical studies into dawn simulation, Outside In launched the world's first wake-up light, Natural Alarm Clock.

2000

With the new and improved Natural Alarm Clock arriving in 1994, followed by the launch of the iconic Bodyclock in 2000, this was just the beginning of the Bodyclock journey.

2006

Jonathan Cridland took over the company and in 2007, Outside In rebranded to Lumie, as it is known today.

2013

In 2013, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and his crew undertook “The Coldest Journey” — the first ever attempt to cross Antarctica in winter. We supplied the team with our lights to help them maintain healthy sleep-wake cycles as there was little natural light available (other than the light produced by the stars on a clear night).

2015

We teamed up with Dr Konstantin Danilenko to carry out research to compare the efficacy of dawn simulation to conventional bright light for the treatment of seasonal affective disorder. “This study confirms the efficacy of using a dawn simulator, such as Lumie Bodyclock, for treating SAD as an alternative to bright light therapy.”

2020

The year everything changed. With the outbreak of the global pandemic, the way we live and work changed forever, and the role of light in regulating our sleep/wake patterns became more apparent than ever.

2023

The year we launched Lumie Task, a highly adjustable bright light therapy desk lamp for better mood and energy, crystal clear illumination and maximum visual comfort.
