What age is Willow suitable for, and can I use it with a newborn?

Willow is designed to be suitable from birth (including night-feeding). Whilst the lamp is aimed at younger children, it works on the same principle as our adult lamps and is appropriate for use at any age.

Is it safe?

Yes, Willow has been independently tested and is CE marked. It has been designed specifically for use by children under the age of 14 and is compliant with the associated safety standards. The light is gentle on developing eyes, and the nightlight is safe to leave on all night.

What is a circadian rhythm and why does it matter for young children?

A circadian rhythm is your natural bodyclock, which governs when we feel sleepy or alert. In babies and toddlers this system is still developing, meaning light exposure can have an even more pronounced effect compared to adults. Willow is designed to support, not disrupt, this natural process from the earliest days and as they develop. If you'd like to learn more about circadian rhythms we've written a blog about it.

How does the sunset simulation help at bedtime?

Willow provides a gradual transition to night that helps to settle your child. The light fades gradually with a realistic colour change, that mimics a natural sunset, to promote sleepiness. It takes 20 minutes from full brightness to off or ends with a nightlight when selected. You can adjust the brightness during the sunset, and the fading will then resume from the brightness you have set. By the time the light reaches its dimmest red, many children are already drowsy or asleep.

Do I have to use the nightlight?

No, it’s optional. Turn the nightlight switch on to finish the sunset with a warm low-stimulation glow that provides illumination without triggering wakefulness, to help your child slip easily back to sleep. If you don’t want to use it, simply flick the switch on the base and the light will gently fade to off at the end of the sunset sequence.

What time should I turn it on before bed?

The light is intended to be used as your main source of illumination throughout your bedtime routine. Even at its brightest Willow emits low-blue white light to avoid stimulation and support your child as they wind down ready for sleep. The sunset sequence lasts 20 minutes so dependent on your routine, you need to push the sunset button 15 to 20 minutes before you aim to leave the room. We recommend building this into your routine, for example just before you start a bedtime story. It might take a few days to find the right ritual for your family; the key is consistency.
